Telephone: The telephone or phone is a telecommunications device which is used to transmit and receive sound (most commonly voice and speech) across distance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone/

That is all I want it for... The only bells & whistles I prefer are (Caller ID, Call Waiting, Voice Mail).. All this are available as part of the data packet send and received in communication so not really a feature..

Somehow Photos/E-mail/MP3/calendar does not come here. I wonder why?

It is either the subscribers who have problem understanding basics or the MKTG machine in the big PHONE companies want more of our money...

r u seriously saying "DON'T BUY THE GOODS". do u know that it is our right to buy and sell in the free market.

it is also important that we buy things in the market to promote economy ....

the rule is that it should be a level and fair trading field. The case has been filed by people / manufacturers (against Jon) who fear that DeCSS is going to break the monopoly in this area.

Now it is interesting to see someone trying to support MONOPOLY..... r u from MS$ :)

Every $ Product has a equivalent free product in the market. so making $ is not the issue, but should we allow the Manufacturers define what is our privilage and expenses ?

It is clear to everyone that Jon was only building a S/w for his Linux box so he could watch DVD. This S/w was being built on a product that already existed......

Effectively the case filed against Jon is void. Now if Justice is as follows :

"What he did is illegal". The we have a problem. Should the Manufactures be allowed to dictate the functionality of a product so that they along can profit for by selling it .....

If so then what is the difference between a LAW and a PATENT.

Also if this is illegal then the Casse of the DOJ against Microsoft should also be declared against Microsoft as this is exactly what MS$ was involved in. Bull to anyone who say's that MS$ cornered them into selling WINDOWS boxes with IE only. Everyone wants to make the big $, so instead of begging they make their product most wanted and corner everyone else into buying it.

Is this not what capitalism is all about .... in communism only the govt. has the right to this, so big $ making exists there also.

SO WHAT IS FREEDOM as defined by our constituiton (i guess every country has its own defeninition).

Now we will have to wait and really see the definition of FREEDOM as defined by the GLOBAL ECONOMIC and BUSINES Comunity.

The real success would be in terms of the commecrial value of these system to support further enhancements. But the real situation is that commercial UNIX's like SUN / HP have still not implemented many of the good features that either FreeBSD or Linux have yet they are still outstanding in sales. To top the list the NET has whole list of pathetic performance of Windows NT and talk to any Sys ADMIN for the rest, still It tops the DeskTop...

Could the real reason be that the word FREE is being misrespresented as POOR QUALITY ....

I cannot think of a better reason for wither Free BSD or Linux not achieving the Compatitive levels. Where do we start the real education ... ?

Also PSL is not really that big a programming language. It has along way to go for that. But still most of the Maintenence tasks could be taken care of.

Is BOB trying to tell us that Statistics is proof enough for a desecion ?!??!?

Well he should know (being one of the few people to have compiled a OS) more oftern than not the way statistical figures r read is the way answers will be.

The most important point which he he may not have understood or he greatfully ignores is actually society decides the life of a product and not the marketing force of a company.

This community has come together to do something good which they could all use. Now after finding it is good they are sharing the idealogy and the results of that with all others. Practically free of cost.

Over the years in Social Revolutions we have seen that the most successful once have been the once where comman man felt comfortable in a belief and started following and slowly everyone seemed to follow them. More often that not the person did it because he felt good and also someone else started feeling good and so on and on.

Here i think the primary problem is that many people for some vague reason have a inhibition against UNIX like system. This more of a pschycologial fear which has been there for as long as UNIX.

Yes in many ways LINUX does resemble UNIX and with more improvements which the UNIX market has also acknowledged. Why should LINUX not be like UNIX. I am yet to see a programming language which has replace C. I do not see that happenning. So effectively LINUX is an improvement of an idealogy which was born some 20 odd years ago. For sometime during in its teens it was wild then go into its business perspective and later matured to be dependable.

    It is still growing......

    Now Windows .........

I am yet come across a situation where people have pointed out that a particular feature was first implemented by WINDOWS which has been later on copied by UNIX world.

The point everyone is against is very simple. How many of us have not seen a WINDOZEEEEEEEEEEE or WINDOW crash ?

This factor has been going on and MS has been getting away with it so often that it does not seem to be of any use in testing one of their products. Either we whave not finished installing all the patches and upgrades and started our actual work or the product is killed by miscrosoft for something else.

Effectively the scoiety is being treated as a gueniea pig for MS whims and fancies. The best part is we pay them for that.

I think most of the problem MS is going to have in the coming years is the Quality of the product and NOT the product by itself. Because none of the products they have are their own creation, they are features added to idealogies which people had created long time ago.

Society has show once they do not believe in the quality of a commodity they do not have any qualms in turning their back on it.

This is something where LINUX might have a lead. Because it is the society which willingly doing the QC and the same society which make them work. So this might be just the edge that LINUX community has to prove that a society is more important than the product.

  14. When will People and the Media Grow Up? on The Public & The Internet: Open Forum · · Score: 1

Do people really want to believe that they can decide if something is good or bad?

I guess this goes for Media as well. Do they not understand that is the user who makes it good or bad.

The internet in particular has had such a phenomenal impact on the lives of common people, which nobody finds interesting.

This is attitude inspite of seeing the goodness of NET the whole day.

Some incident like the one where a Girl in Europe with serious illness got locked in her school room and CALLED FOR HELP ON THE NET. Some child who was accessing the NET in US could understand her and helped save her by informing the elders.

This particular incident though a Life Saver for the Girl and a practicle effort for the child is US went practically unnoticed.

I guess people want stories where someone is BAD and someone is GOOD. For them that is a story and Where there is nothing BAD there is no FIGHT or BLOODSHED they are not interested.

This I feel is where a person grows up.

I know lot of good things happening on the NET, why can't the Children also be taught about the useful things and guided that way.

I defenitely do not see any effort to that end, except when some thing goes wrong, even if the BAD person has an e-mail account the NET becomes BAD.

NET is what we created, i guess wether it is GOOD or BAD, it what we put it to use for.
