Yep, I have a Creative Nomad Muvo 128m flash player and it pops up in iTunes and lets me add/remove tracks.
Yep again, only plays mp3s and not the AAC files, but that's not iTunes' fault.
The PLE version was also free for 4.0, I don't know about previous versions... which is why I was reading comments. I swore the copy I've had for years was a free version that I got from their official site.
Although on their information page they state "...with prices ranging from just $2.95 to $15.95 per title.". 4/10 of the top10 books on the same page are over $15.95.
They're not really books on tape, since there's no tape involved;). Which is a great idea, since carring around a dozen tapes and having to change them every hour isn't ideal.

You can burn mp3 cds through iTunes, but not any tracks that were purchased through the store.
