IF Distributed.net got into this it would take them at most all of an hour to finish off the rest of the 230 keys and that is with a ton of effort being duplicated across Distributed.net.

No, they are better off continuing to test out RC5-64 for free..... =)

I agree with you for the most part. The only problem I have is your example. Distributed.net is using a different method to break RC5-64 than what the CSS hackers used. They didn't attempt to brute force attack CSS, instead they found a kind of security hole in Xing/Real Network's security

If somebody found a glaring security hole in RC5-64, it too would be brought down.

I am not a woman, but I am certain that whining is an attribute that will turn women off. There is alot of whining going on about this article. Don't complain that the media has bad stereotypes about nerds and geeks. No single person is a stereotype, so do not let it effect you. Just deal with it.

"Would you like some cheese to go with your whine?"

This is not to say that I do not sympathize with some of my fellow /.ers. I too am unlucky at love, but I try not to let it effect me, and I don't brood on it (anymore =)

I may be wrong (IANAL), but this is how I understood the article that Mr. Young wrote.

If you publish the code of your software a year prior to the attempt of another person to patent that same code, the patent would be invalid because of the exsistence of the code available to the public well before the application of the patent.

If I am not wrong, then all Open Source Software that has been available to the public for more than a year will be safe. But what I also gathered is that when a patent is applied for, you must show the patent office proof that the person applying for the patent is not the first to come up with this "novel" way of doing things.

  8. Payment from Jane's on Jane's Intelligence Review Lauds Slashdot Readers as Cyberterrorism Experts · · Score: 1

Please excuse the contents of this article and don't mistake it for pure flamebait (although it is a bit of one).

    *begin rant *

The attitude expressed by the Slashdot community is now at an all time high hypocrisy level.

Usually /. readers are always pushing for the ideas of freedom in software and in the press. (Look at how many people use and appreciate Babelfish and NYT Online). And these same people gripe when they have to pay for either software or news.

Now with this Jane's article, these same readers are all about "GIMME THE MONEY!!!" It seems to me that they have totally forgotten about their roots in the open source community, and especially about the roots of Slashdot in Open Source. CmdrTaco and the rest of the /. admins have given us a great forum to express our ideas and knowledge concerning Linux/OpenSource/Anti-Microsoft, and they have given it to us for free.

Now when Jane's is offering to pay, everybody forgets about the altruism of this community and are only looking out for themselves..

If the readers of Slashdot were more concerned about the OpenSource Community than their own pocketbooks, they would either refuse to be paid for their contributions or ask that it be donated to a OpenSource/FreeSoftware committee/foundation/company/group.

I am not a true hacker by any means, and I probably don't get paid anywhere near what a good programmer gets paid (I am a lowly word processor), but I would ask that my share of money go to some group that needs it more than I.

    *end rant*

I implore all /.ers that have money coming to them..... please don't ask for it. Or, ask for it to go to (as another poster said) FSF or some other foundation. Let's show the Jane's people what Open Source is really about.

He did an excellent job in that as well. He went up toe-to-toe against Jack Lemmon who played the 8th juror (who convinces the others to change their votes).

If you go to the video store tonight to get Dr. S or Patton, and they've been /.ed, then try getting the remake of 12 Angry Men (I think it was made in 1997 or 1998).

If the GPL has not had a trial by fire in a court of law, perhaps a company that is friendly to the Free Software community would be willing to try to break the terms of the GPL and be taken to court.

Once the GPL has proven itself in court, we wouldn't have any worries, because precedent would be set.
