What I found is that there comes a time when the worker has to decide what his or her priorities are, or someone else will be happy to decide for him or her. I work in a high-tech job that's pretty fun, and one of the things they constantly hold as a value is "quality of life" for the employees. There's times when it's just lip-service, but generally it's seen as a sincere interest. So that's nice. But recently, I found myself turning down a job with an internet startup about to IPO. Considering the pre-hype, it was a good chance to be a multi-millionaire in a few years. (The company actually has a product which is selling like crazy, and business smarts as well.) When offered this, I had to really look at nothing but work and sleep for the next few years, or helping my 9 year old son grow as person. I chose my son. So I won't get rich, but I find the choice to be right for me. There's lots of jobs, but only one of your life. Which is more important, and how much money is enough?
