    The REASON you can't do that is because more likely then not, you signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement, when you joined the company.
    Contracts are stronger then law, as you have noted. Thats what freedom is about, we can contract our rights away. Most people usually do it by signing licenses.

    As to whether the 17th amendment is valid or not, that is up to the lawyers to decide.

    Partially incorrect.

    A US citizen can expatriate (renounce your citizenship) AND remain an American. You don't have to leave the country. Here is the 14th amendment:
    BILL OF RIGHTS
    ARTICLE XIV
    Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.

    I personally know of Americans who have expatriated and become a State Citizen, so thats how I know it works.

    If you research Sovereign State Citizen you can verify this for yourself.

    U.S. jurisdiction DOES apply to _U.S._ citizens anywhere they live. You might want to pick up Black's Law Dictionary and look up citizenship, jurisdiction, and United States (which has many meanings!)

    I'm wondering if there isn't a BETTER keyboard then QWERTY _AND_ Dvorak.
    i.e.
    Instead of arguing which keyboard is better, why can't we design a better one? (with respect to key layout)

    Come on you people in kinesiology, do some ergonomics studies, and design a better keyboard. :-)

    If we already have a better/new keyboard, does anyone have any links? (I'm intereseted in NON QWERTY and Dvorak keyboards.)

    The REASON its legal is because your driver's license is a contract. You might want to research "invisible contracts."

    It starts off listing _why_ the orginal ten articles of the Bill of Rights are what they are. The rest of the book shows cases where the corrupt US government has continually eroded the rights of the people.

    The best part of the book is when they quote Jefferson saying (paraphrasing of course) "Why do we need to specifically list what rights the sovereign people have? Whatever rights they don't give to the government, they retain. If we list them, future government will assume those are the only rights people have." thus he included Article X of the Bill of Rights.

    Its an easy read and you should be able to finish it off in a weekend.

    I have to agree, not every software project will benefit from Open Source, but I wouldn't be quite so quick to write off games JUST YET.

    Yes, games need a 'focus' and over-riding consistent plot/story, and that may not be possible due to the 'too many cooks spoil the stew'; fortunately there is progress:

    Notice that the above links are engines, not full games. Once people have some good free engines/tools to build a game, I think we'll start seeing some more open source games. As to the quality, now that is up for debate. I thought there was an article on slashdot a while back that discussed why games would never be open source. i.e. where will you find artists and musicians to work [for free] on an open source game?
    For the time being, a [proprietary] custom-coded engine designed specifically for a game will do a much better job then a generic open source engine, but who knows what the future holds?

    Slightly off-topic:
    I like this line: "Open Source works in practice; will it work in theory?"

    Yeah, and in theory, NT works, too bad it doesn't in practise. (and yes, I use NT _AND_ Linux at home, both have their place.)

    I know several people who don't have SSN and have gotten passports. Use all zero's if you don't have one.

    Is it just me, or am I the only one disgusted at how the Media glazes over facts and over hypes the rumors. It makes me sick to my stomach. It allmost makes one wander what else the media has covered up. i.e. How Rodney King was SO high on drugs that it took a NUMBER of police officers to try and subdue him, etc.

    I'm glad SOME people still hold to the principles of respectable journalism. Thank you to you /. readers pointing out the truth.

    I tend to agree: You can write bad code in any language. (Is there a name for this axiom anyone?)

    Too much code, and you're spending too much time reading TWO languages. But how many programmers usually over-comment? ;-)

    Aside, does anyone have a list of the "must-have" software development books?
    i.e. "Computer Graphics" by Foley and van Dam and the Graphic Gems series are the "bibles" of graphics.
    I have "Code Complete" and "Rapid Development" both by Steve McConnel along with Design Patterns, which I find are great. Anyone have any others that every developer should have?

    Sorry, I wasn't clearer. I'm well aware of the differences. It just seems that people doing the laundering are also usually caught with tax evasion. My point was: BOTH are un-needed if you check into off-shore banking.

    In the US you can use a W-8 form to show that your foreign company is not eligable to be taxed, BUT ONLY IF the foreign company does not have a US tax payer's identification number (TIN.) Some countries don't tax foreign income, so basically the company is able to earn money tax free. Why else do you think off-shore banking/companies are popular with millionaries?!
    BTW, the foreign company WILL have a number in the jurisdiction that it is registered in, but that can not be used as a TIN outside its jurisdiction.

    I have met people who have been external to the IRS for a number of years, so I know it is possible.

    Work smarter, not harder.

    You don't need to launder money to avoid the tax man.

    If you do some research into off-shore banking, you will find certain countries don't tax foreign income.

    You would be better off using other Off-shore banks like the Isle of Man ones.

    Not quite true. Non-Resident Aliens can open a Non-Interest Bearing account if they really need a US bank account.

    AI really should mean Artificial Ignorance.
    If we had computers with even a SMIDGEN of intelligence we would be making progress.

    Not to start a flamewar, but I encourage people to go take some AI courses and see for yourself just how hopelessly clueless we are about building an intelligent computer, let alone an ignorant one within a limited context and strict domain. i.e. Image Recognition, Language Understanding, etc. are NP-complete problems, they aren't going to be solved any time soon.
