  1. You missed the point on Top Five Reliable Providers · · Score: 4, Insightful

If you read the article you would see:
A summary showing the ten providers whose sites experienced the fewest failed requests and the fasest connection times during June

So this one is about performance, not uptime.

So the fact that Freebsd tops out on performance *and* uptimes is pretty amazing. What I will give you that you are correct about, is the performance is highly dependent on the hardware and the skill of the techs. Uptime is not everything for sure.

"There's no magic bullet for uptime." Well if it *is* uptime you're looking for, the closest to a magic bullet you can get is FreeBSD or BSD/OS. 5 years is a damn long time.
essentially the top 50 uptimes ever, is fully dominated by BSD

  2. Re:No - What a misleading article intro on (When) Will Linux Pass Apple On The Desktop? · · Score: 2, Interesting

The article links to absolutely no hard facts that linux is even growing on the desktop much less overtaking MacOsX.

I'm not saying desktop perfection is even what linux should aim towards, but come on. This just proves that the editors don't even read the articles. The article *says* it links to an article regarding linux overtaking OSX, but it doesn't.

Sorry Charlies, but linux is nowhere even in the ballpark of as polished on the desktop as OSX

That does not mean that it can't be a viable desktop either for a geek or after it has been heavily tweeked to act like it should and work correctly, but that is not what it will take to be widespread on the desktop. I mean seriously, when is the last time you sat down to an untweaked linux GUI and everything just worked? Now how about flawlessly, and cohesively like OSX?.

It doesn't yet and linux will not overtake OSX on the desktop because of it.

Now I'll get modded to oblivion because I've spoken against the pharisees, but seriously, one more severely misleading topic description down, many more to come.

  3. Re:It is a theory - and I don't have proof (SCO?) on What's Behind The Odd Data? · · Score: 1

Well your theory may be right, but if you read the cnet article, they seem to be a little less sure that ISS has found the real culprit. They also give more details of the code that was found:

"It is very buggy," Ingevaldson [ from ISS ] said. "It didn't even write information to its data file correctly."

That would imply there either is no major skill involved, or it is a decoy.

-I said that the tax cuts are for the rich, which they are

you're right, but not for the reason you think you are. It's not because the republicans want to shower benefits on the rich. It is because the rich are the only ones that even pay any significant amount of taxes.

you cannot lower someone's taxes that pays none. Well, you can, but then its just welfare.

54% of income tax revenues come from the top 5% of income earners. (which is only about 130k as of recently). the bottom 50% of income earners pay about 4% of the tax revenue.

I have clients that pay more taxes in a year than most people make (and one that pays more than just about anyone reading here makes). Therefore almost any tax cut is going to put more money back in their pocket. But lets think about that for a minute. Is letting someone keep more of their own money that they *earned* showering tax cuts on them?

Wealthy people make more money because they have learned how to create income and wealth. They also employ most of the rest of us (directly or indirectly) so we can eat, feed out children, and go to schools.

Notice I am not wealthy yet, but I will be. Wealth /= evil, nor does one have to be the least bit dishonest to accumulate it.
