People place products thinking they can get it cheaper, and then when they talk to the store the sales people scream and cuss at them if they don't buy addons they "must" buy (like power cords and batteries).
For every 1 reputable company based in NYC and NJ there are hundreds which are ran y petty criminals.
aah... brings back memories of tsim sha tsui, kowloon. folks spending two whole days of their vacation getting yelled at and insulted so they can save $50 on a camera.
Ah... UCSD... sounds like this might be what you're referencing:

could be interesting if linked up with the stuff Microsoft are developing (Slashdot story from couple of days ago).
From the www.ubuntu.com announcement:
"Unity is now the default in the Ubuntu Desktop session. This is partially implement..."
"It support Quick lists on context menu..."
Not wanting to sound like a chauvinist, but I prefer my announcements written by native speakers.
In addition to poxy written English and problem with summary pointed out above, I get to this, third paragraph:
four more alpha releases of Ubuntu 11.04 are planned for after this one, followed by a beta version due roughly a month before Natty Narwhal's scheduled official release on April 28.
It seem to me, that they are taking success-concepts from the western world and integrate them into their culture.
Actually the source might not be 'western' but Chinese - see comment lower down "The Truth about $35 Android Tablet from Indian Gov" with story from androidos.in.
I guess the nexus404.com were just copying the error. I followed a chain of misinformation down thru techpp.com, newlaunches.com, digitaltrends.com - all of whom dutifully copied the 2GB RAM quote - can't find the source. Apparently, according to those reports, it'll run on 2 watts.
Yeah, I also wondered what a "PDF reader unzip" is. The mistake is courtesy of Brian Yalung at nexus404.com. The editor here removed the link but kept the quote (see Related Stories).
the 48m is the amount the outsourcer has spent on improvements to their entire operation
It's the amount that Service Birmingham has spent - Service Birmingham is a joint venture between Capita (see summary) and Birmingham City Council. See my reply to GP for link.
Service Birmingham is our joint venture with Birmingham City Council, Europe's largest local
authority, established in April 2006 to provide the Council's information and communications
technology (ICT) services. Substantial investment and innovation have created an all-new platform that underpins the Council's ambitious business transformation programme.
To date we've invested £48.4m in a combination of staff training, network upgrades, server replacements, hardware and software - and we continue to drive efficiency through innovation.
Nothing can touch add-ons like NoScript, AdBlock, etc. (and most of my add-ons and their associated functionality can't be found on Chrome, Opera, etc.).
Well, as far as I know NoScript hasn't found it's way into the gallery of Chrome's extensions yet...
Don't know about any gallery*, but could I interest you in NotScripts?

* There's a download link pointing to chrome.google.com/extensions/ there so I guess it must be sort of official...
The summary (conveniently?) left out the part where it says that this package is only included on OEM installations, not normal installs.
Which part? TFA only speculates that this is intended for OEM installs. The package is 14 hours old and Ubuntu have said nothing. It'll be a while before we know the salient details.
I wouldn't give a crap. I already run Windows updates and send bug reports. This is just a PING for crying out loud.
It's NOT just a 'PING'. From TFA:
Note that this does not send any user specific data; it only transmits the operating system version (/var/lib/ubuntu_dist_channel), the machine product name
O... mentioned many times over and over in the original article. its only installed on OEM installations. the ones that are customized by canonical for use by oems. its not enabled/installed on your ubuntu install if you just download ubuntu or upgrade. geez...
The article *doesn't* mention over and over. It *speculates* - once - that this is for OEMs. It can't be enabled or disabled on any Ubuntu download as the package is only 14 hours old.
Think he's talking abt repositories. I guess it'll take a little while, the package is only 14 hours old. When all's in sync you'll see something here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=census
It's been shipped with Ubuntu for the last several releases but there's no nag anymore. You have to go to Software Sources (Package Manager) and go to the Statistics tab and check the box to activate it.

Yep: Seems like 'privacy-violating flows' = 'history sniffing' ... common reference is Youporn.

CmdrTaco: Do you EVER read any submission before publishing?

How ironic, considering that the properly-written alternative I suggested above is written by a 'Kate Stewart'.

I then stopped reading.
Really? Desperation? Is that what it is?
No, that's what it's.

FYI, TFA only mentions 'Microsoft', no mention of 'Word'.

The summary is disingenuous: the cost is for their IT, not just a single HTML website.
Could be:

The cost of the site itself was covered a few months back - excellent reporting from Heather Brooke and friends:
http://podnosh.com/blog/2010/05/27/the-report-on-birmingham-gov-uk-is-published/
http://helpmeinvestigate.com/investigations/49-when-can-we-expect-a-new-birmingham-gov-website
Could you be more specific? I've done a view source and checked NoScript and RequestPolicy - nothing there.
Yes you're definitely on to something:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICBM_address
Definitely issues - see 3rd and 5th results on Google for "Birmingham City Council website":
http://steflewandowski.com/2009/09/why-build-a-new-site-for-birmingham-city-council/
http://www.bccdiy.com/
And their page won't open for me - I've got a slightly misbehaving proxy server here
