hdparm -Y juste puts it in sleep mode.
However your post made me RTFM and I really have to thank you. By typing
hdparm -M128/dev/hda
the difference is amazing and the performance is the same. However as the FM says, THIS FEATURE IS EXPERIMENTAL AND NOT WELL TESTED. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK
