  1. demographics ahead of debugging on Microsoft Tracking Behavior of Newsgroup Posters · · Score: 2, Interesting

If Microsoft spent as much time tracking bugs and security holes as they do users, they may have a product approaching linux on the stability scale.
Ah wait they cant do that can they.... they dont like revealing code so that the community can help them fix their bugz
Gates & Bullmer look inside and fix problems, not outside and cause more
Blame IBM if they had waited for CPM86 we would never jave these leaches at MS, they would still be working on basic

    novel concept eh

More & more as I look at business implementation of computers/software, it shows a lack of understanding of business needs. We dont need 90% of the "features" in Oracle, we need a true simple tuneable RDMBS like mySQL.
We need web based applications, not a new terminal on every desk every 3 years ( true platform independence)
One of the best tool combos is LAMP ..LINUX APACHE MySQL PHP ... or even PERL
And like this writer said contribute to FSF so that this quality continues

  3. If you think RH is expensive look at Oracle on The Increasing Cost of Red Hat Linux? · · Score: 1

I would question why you need to move to Oracle. Oracle is advantageous only if you want a high concurrency database ( and disaster recovery up to the point of failure or a point in time prior to failure), or if you want to write PLSQL backend stuff. The other reason to select Oracle is the ability to tune your I/O down to micro levels. Most institutions use Oracle because its known & trusted, for this you pay a massive & exhorbident premium)
For most lesser applications simple RDMBS like MySQL with innoDB tables can work brilliantly.
Debian is the GNU linux but unfortunately does not work easily with all network & video drivers. I would recommend looking at debian on your hardware, and if it works ( as it should) donating some money to the developers, instead of pouring money into Red Hats coffers. However if you need constant tech support, stay with redhat, they need the money in order to suppoer their product

Amen. I like to stay with debian too. but its like they deliberatly make it hard. Normally I want a LAMP server. linux Apache PHP Mysql. I also want vnc server telnet & ftp servers up. The biggest hasses are network cards & video drivers. Also defaulting to non apahche web server sux.

Remember when Apple sued MS about the fact that they stole the GUI interface from Xerox first. Now SCO is playing that game too. I so hope that all existing SCO users switch to linux, and wait to be sued. How do you spell vampire ? oh yeah "BLOODSUCKER".
This is an affront to open source, and to software decency.
My they are even making Bill Gates look mild mannered

  7. Re:Mandatory defies the nature of open source.... on Brazil Mandates Shift to Free Software · · Score: 1

Mandatory in this context means the government is not going to burn money, in transfers to gatesco. It is legitimate for any business of government to make this decision. Open source is not related to this decision. The government of Brazil still needs to honour open source licencing, as does any other user. The cost savings & advantages of this approach are potentially huge, assuming that the loss of jobs within the MS infrastructure in Brazil dont counterbalance this. I personally wish the government of Canada would make such a bold step
