Thats only part of the story. Programme requires an ability to hold lots of different things in your head at once and make judicious decisions on where you need to get to and how to get there. Its well know in theoretical physics that the abilty to manipulate large amounts of complex information drops off seriously in your late 20s and 30s.
Einstein badly quoted to the effect : "if you haven't made your contribution by 30 then you never will"
While there are some notable exceptions to this rule, for most of us it will be true.
