    I had an old Volvo 740 with the boost bumb up kit and the extra fuel mod. At 130 MPH I swear you could see the gas gauge move!

    Yeah, I can't recall the last time I had a car that would not exceed 140 MPH, but none of them were electric. That does sound fun, but I am guessing range at that speed was about 50 miles. My old Porsche could do better than 30 MPG until about 90 and then fuel economy went off a cliff above that.

    The ones I know are frighteningly divorced from the real world. They imagine a never-ever-existed fantasy land of 1950s Leave-It-To-Beaver combined with no-holds-barred 1800s style robber baron capitalism. Not only do they think climate change is a hoax, evolution is too and for SURE our current president is from Kenya. Many of them see no good reason not to default on the debt. A typical quote is like "Sure they'll be no more DEA, DOE, SSA, DOA, Medicare, or any other part of the federal government that doesn't involve missiles and bombs, but think how great a country this will be then".

    I think wasting 24 BILLION dollars on a stupid political stunt is about as far from a very good thing as you can get. This would be like my wife getting annoyed at me going to strip clubs and cashing in our 401Ks and burning the money in a bonfire to get attention. Not that I go to strip clubs. That you know of. This week.

    There is no challenge on a closed road. Having BTDT, route planning and dealing with traffic is a huge part of success.

    I went 200 MPH every single place but YOUR TOWN. Case dismissed, seeing as there is no proof otherwise. Repeat for the 1535 other towns he drove through. OR The other guy was driving ;)

    You see the Tea Party as rational actors. Many of us see them as deluded fools - or "usefull idiots" - stirred up by puppet masters who have NO intention of actually bringing about TeaHadi Paradise.

    My BMW did. The 3 series used use data bus, not two like the 7 series. My Ipod interface went nuts one day and took over the heater controls and tried to roast me to death. To be fair, this data bas did NOT have access to the DSC, ABS, and other engine controls, but it did do a fair job hosing up the car until I figured out what was going on.

    I had a Toyota. The throttle kept sticking at full and I lurched my way to the dealer by shifiting into 5th real early and cutting the ignition. After bout 20 minutes the mechanic comes around the corner trying not to laugh holding up the floormat. The corner was all ripped up where it was catching in the gas pedal assembly. I got a new floormat and was on my way.

    Not exactly. Fly-by-wire is LIGHTER than fly-by-cables-and-hydraulics. Saving weight is EVERYTHING in airplane design. Boeing designs their software for the PILOT to be the boss and Airbus wanted to protect the airplane FROM the pilots. So even if direct mechanical controls are no longer to be seen in large aircraft, there are still a lot of choices to be made as to how much human control there is going to be.

    BMW had issues with rear suspension attachment point failure in the the E-36 series in the forward points and reinforced those. The next series, the E-46, had issues with the rear attach points since now the front ones didn't give way first. The joke was prior to the E-36 the chasis was designed by intuition, experience, and sliderule. Then they got computers and the accounting department was delighted that the engineers could figure out exactly how much metal to leave out LOL.

    Bullshit! I can get my papers replaced easily and so can someone who loses their physical work permit. Can you imagine losing your passport in the Bahamas and being told you can never come home again? Also note that if I get pulled over for driving "undocumented", it will take the po-po about 3 minutes to figure out if I am lying about losing my wallet or really have no license.

    As a fellow Mayflower descendent, you may want to check up on your history. The original passengers and the original Indians they met got on OK considering the settlers swiped their corn stores when they first showed up. Fast forward some years and *both* the next generation of Indian leaders AND white leaders thought they were bad-ass and wouldn't mind a fight or two. Also note Europeans had a long tradition of conquering each other and warfare was practically the Olympics and the Super Bowl combined for Indians. It all went about as well as you would expect...

    See previous post. "Dead Weight" is a book about flying in the islands back in the day which is what I used to do. You can sometimes find it on Amazon used. I love the libertarian fantasy land where you can just uproot your wife from her job, your kids from school, and instantly sell your house while the local economy just had their largest employer lay everyone off and just go wander off to find a new job no problem. It is like living in a 19th century town when the mill goes bankrupt - there ARE no other jobs to be had that didn't rely on the mill one way or the other.

    I used to be a commercial freight pilot and the name comes from a book about flying cargo and smuggling in the Caribbean. Government does have some slackers and always has since ancient Egypt. So does every other large organization I have ever worked at. We had guys at Westinghouse that couldn't tell you why they were there if you put a gun to their heads.

    The best illustration of this is the protesters with signs saying "Keep the government away from my Medicare" LOL. Medicare IS government run single payer universal coverage and by all reports it works pretty well. You just have to be over 65 to get it. The TeaHadis have done a good job convincing people that somehow their own government is their mortal enemy. Their "low information" voters apparently don't know that Medicare IS the government (roll eyes).

    You think we all just ran off and refused to work? WTF???? Try this: Send your employees home. Tell them they might be called back in one day or maybe a week or maybe a month or maybe never. Tell them they might get paid for their time off or they might not. Wait a couple weeks and ask them how much fun they are having on "vacation".

    This is HIGHLY variable. When I was 16 and the cops pulled us over for something, I always mentioned how I would put in a good word when the chief was over at my house going over the budget for next year with my dad ;) In the hood - very different outcome I am sure!

    I was driving my old Porsche about 120 late night and one car followed my for 5 miles :) Then the blue lights came on :( The officer asked if I knew how fast I was going. ME: 120 MPH sir! OFFICER: What is the speed limit? ME: 55 MPH sir! OFFICER: Between laughing asks me to try and drive at the speed limit and leaves. Some times playing coy is not the best move.
