  1. Re:I know a guy on Realistic Sysadmin Workload for a Company of 30? · · Score: 2, Insightful

One could also focus on the positive aspects.

You will gain experience in an area where you currently have none. This may be useful when raise time comes around...but if it does not...it will be useful when you seek employment elsewhere.

Take advantage of any opportunity to get experience in a new area, especially training. Get your activities recognized in writing and keep them for future reference in your job hunting.

I can promise that it will pay you dividends down the road if you approach it with the right attitude and motivation. I used opportunities like that to work into my current position as an IT Manager for a telecommunications company. Experience CAN be as valuable as education in the right company, so do not rule it out unless you do not have the time available to develop your skills. By that I mean...don't sacrifice your family for the sake of your job. Consider it a learning opportunity... Read the books, get training, find contacts with others who are doing the same work and see where it takes you.

Also keep in mind that you willingness to take on extra responsibility will not hurt you in your the eyes of your supervisor either.

It really all depends on your focus...if you are a get by only type guy...then don't do it. If you are a motivated individual with the time to learn new things and the desire to be more than you are...then go for it.

  3. Business Opportunity on Canada Immune From RIAA? · · Score: 5, Interesting

Wow....I bet a Canadian company could make a fortune selling high speed Internet access to those in the US, Or possibly just a high speed proxy service.

Then when the RIAA asked them for the user of the IP that is 'stealing' their music...they could tell them to take a flying leap.

Any bets as to how long it will take some enterprising Canadian to come up with this business model?

Or as to how long before the RIAA starts buying off memebers of Canada's parliment, the way that they buy our Senators and Representatives?

  4. Re:Get used to it on CIO Magazine On Offshore IT · · Score: 2, Insightful

Corporate decisions are driven by profit above all else.
So, if you want corporations to make different decisions, you need to create a profit motive in one of the following ways:

    1) Loss of sales, because consumers do not wish to support a company that is not supporting IT growth in the U.S.
    2) Loss of sales, because consumers are not getting 'value' from the off-shore IT support.
    3) Financial penalties imposed on companies by the Governement (Taxes, tarrifs and etc.) because they are not employing U.S. IT workers and damaging the economy.
    4) Fear of potential loss of sales, because of bad PR resulting from the cutting of jobs in the U.S. while moving IT positions overseas.
This fear could motivate by affecting the companies stock price, or by causing the decisions makers to believe that any of the above are likely to take place as a result of the decision.

Because of widespread apathy, it is unlikely that any of these factors will come into play.
Unfortunately, we in the U.S. like to complain about how companies are taking our jobs away...but it does not seem to affect our purchasing decisions.
Why is that? If we really do care, then our wallets should send the message. But we tend to do anything to save a buck, even if it costs a few jobs.

Things will not change unless we make them change. Don't complain about the current environment if you are not willing to DO something about it.

As an example....if you buy a DELL computer...you are supporting the trend of sending U.S. jobs off-shore.
    Answer: Stop buying DELL computers,
recommend that your workplace stop buying DELL computers,
don't recommend that anyone buy a DELL computer.

But, if you buy one because the price is great! You have no right to whine.

If people really did care, there would be multiple websites listing every company which does and does not support the U.S. IT workforce.
Offenders would notice that their sales drop when they are added to the list of companies are added to the list....prompting them to correct the situation.
If such sites do exist...I am not aware of them. Are you?
Just keep in mind that companies are very predictable. If you talk with your wallet, they listen to you!

**NOTE**I have never worked for DELL, so I am not a disgruntled former employee.

  5. No problems here. on Windows Is 'Insecure By Design,' Says Washington Post · · Score: 2, Insightful

First off, let me say that I KNOW that Linux and BSD are a lot more stable than Windows...but in the real world...where family and associates need to be spoon fed, Windows is what is in use. I have had absolutely no problems with any of the recent outbreaks. BECAUSE, I ensure that the computers under my care are current with updates (afer I evaluate them) and that firewalls are properly configured.....and yes, I even talk to the users and ensure that they know that the is some new bad thing out there. Nothing personal, but do not whine about Windows if the real problem is that you expect your users to take care of everything themselves. I don't expect them to, and I am happy to help them without making them feel stupid. That is why I am still employed and happy at my job.

Let's keep in mind that you can not have it both ways....If you think that the Federal Government should stay out of such issues...then it means that they will let the states decide. (The states may not have the same protections provided as in the U.S. Constitution) You can not kick the feds out without being willing to put up w what the states want. But on the positive side...it is easier to enact change on a state level than on a federal one.
