  1. not to mention funding for (computer) science... on Capitol Hill Quiet On Tech · · Score: 2, Informative

Funding for (computer) science research also got the shaft this year, in the budget for FY 2008, despite a prior commitment to double the budget over the next 10 years.

USACM has a nice perspective: http://usacm.acm.org/usacm/weblog/index.php?p=558 and so does the Computing Research Association: http://www.cra.org/govaffairs/blog/archives/000646.html

Unfortunately, pork $$$ in the near-term wins over long-term benefits for the entire country...

    happy holidays,

It seems the image version is for current day data only, everything else is available in plain HTML, is still searchable, etc. There is a vast database going back to 1992!

  3. How often do you crawl frequently changing sites? on What's It Like to be Google's Boss Techie? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I was amazed to find out that the new site for Elizabeth Smart was crawled by Google (and ranked first) within only a few days from the kidnapping (and the site being registered). CNN pages are also routinely showing up in Google within hours of being published.

My question is: how do you estimate the rate of change for each site and how often do you crawl frequently updated sites (and update the index)? What is the range of re-crawl (few hours to one month?).

    thanks a lot,
    alex

    PS: Congrats for the Webbys.

You're right, in the original Olympics there was a total ceasefire declared by all participating countries.

Greece is trying to push for this for the 2004 games, with moderate success so far.
