falling supply of crops will drive up the price of gold and cause inflation.
This is false as the printing of money out of thin air causes inflation. It would be more accurate to look at the price of food compared to gold or oil or better yet a basket of commodities. The reason these LDC countries get hit with price inflation the hardest is the inflation(currency creation) is done by the first world and the newly created dollars take a while to circulate out to LDCs. Think of the reverse, the people who get this money first benefit from higher then average salaries and company valuations (government contractors, banks, etc.)
My conclusion after reading this. They didn't pay enough on lobbyists. This of course is scary once you see how much they already pay for lobbying and how fast its grown. Here's the question I pose to you. Is Google, the company of do no evil, doing evil by putting this many resources towards these efforts or is that just par for the course when you get that big?
I think there is a good chance there was no deliberate fraud in NH. Exit polls matched up and a few misreported numbers do not make a smoking gun. What I think the tech community of Slashdot does need to discuss is the fact we have a closed proprietary system used to count votes that offer no means to audit the results. Search Youtube for the Dan Rather special on voting machine fraud and you'll see holes in the system that probably half of Slashdot's readership could manipulate to alter results.
Diebold and other proprietary systems are a step backwards not forward. A voting system is a simple piece of technology. Why not have an open source system designed by some independent group that can audited by anyone and produce a paper slip that can be used for recounts?
A good video on the subject is From Freedom to Fascism (http://www.freedomtofascism.com/) You can purchase the DVD for a $1. The movie cites the book and includes some video commentary from the Author of Creature from Jekyll Island. If you are alarmed about what you learn you may want to consider throwing some support behind Congressmen Ron Paul, who is running for president. He entered politics because of his concerns about monetary policy and the Federal Reserve. He is currently the ranking chair of the house finance committee and there is some great YouTube videos on his exchanges with the Fed during committee meetings.
Starlight by PNL labs(they made the CD) is a good visualization tool. Managed by Batelle Corporation it is resonably cheap too. I can do visual analysis in more imensions then you know existed.
I'm a programmer and think that technology brings with it a unique kind of stress. I've worked jobs like a cashier at burger king, picking tobacco, and a paper route and can say they cause what I would consider "normal stress", that consists of both physical and mental aspects. Programming in a stressful situation however leaves me trying to keep complete focus for very long periods of time with little of no physical exertion. This kind of stress leaves me in need of excercise like sports and beer to recover. With "normal stress" I need a nap afterward.
The Davinci code is a fictional book but is pretty much based off a non-fictional book called Holy Blood, Holy Grail by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln. I finished reading it and its amazing that allot of the historical premises the Davinci Code was based on has some historical evidence to back them. The paperback has a pretty cool intro all about the reaction once the book was published. A must read for people who loved the Davinci Code and like history.
Lets face it the LOTR troligoy is possibly the best ever book to movie rendition. The differences are minimal and forgivable (with the exception of not having the hobbits fight for the shire when they return at the end of the book). I doubt anyone can suggest a book turned into movie that was successful and followed so closely to the book.
