Macs are quite pricey... mostly due to that "cutting edge" hardware push that the company has followed in recent years. If you're looking for a decent priced Mac, try your local used computer shop or Ebay. A G4 with a little extra ram can go a long, long way.
Too bad OS X is beginning to act like MS oses... while it's a beaut, its beginning to put on a little weight. Come on Jobs! You're out of debt, now how about we get OS X in shape and drop a few pounds! (I wonder if these were his New Years resolutions?)
As for linux. And there's always Yellow Dog and Gentoo!

I've been using a Enermax "Whisper" series PS in a Lian Li PC60 case (fans set on low) for 2+ years now. Once I switched from AMD to my P4, the machine started running so quiet that my girlfriend actually would turn it off when it was on cause she couldn't hear it running over the din of my other computers.
After much teasing on my part, I did it myself... the kicker was, all my other computers were off and I was completely alone in the house (no background noise from the kitty, pooch or gf).
Since then, I've sold all my old delta 80's to anyone who will buy them. Oddly, no one is a repeat buyer... they all think the fans are too loud. Imagine that.
-CC -MmmMmMMMM curried chicken, I taste SO gooood!
I work for a small software company where our lifeblood over the last ten years has been selling servers preconfigured with our software all running on SCO's own brand of 'nix. We're in the midst of switching our entire client base (about 180 installations) to Linux.
So far the major concerns coming out of our client's IT departments:
1) Security.
2) Server stability and the availability of updates (we're using RH 8.0 as it requires the least amount of wrangling to make it work with our DBs).
3) See number 1.
As for managerial persons, most of them don't have a clue (about the suit, no comments on managers at this time). Though the few that do, pretty much follow the lead of their IT peeps. The number one priority is get the job done (hopefully without expensive license fees).
Mandix?
