Lucene has the same abilities as FAST and is a lot more efficient , its used by most of the ediscovery vendors and its free in it base format
yes you will have to do some work on the interface and other support areas but its the solution to MS ditching Linux support for search
I think you are wrong about the cant sleep or read whilst driving , I have observed many people driving into Washington,DC read papers , applying makeup , eating (using a fork as well as eating fast food) , also using some sort of sign language , that seem to indicate that I was Number one

In the next version of domino you will be able to SIS attachmnets on a per server basis. There has been talk of using a Content Addressable Storage device (such as EMC's Centera or IBM's DR550) behind the domino server to further SIS the attachments across many machines.
there are archive systems that do use SIS very successfully but these are not dynamic mail systems
the safe load level of a pst is around 2gb , after that it is subject to corruption as to the amount of data , email systems are the largest systems on earth these days encompassing tens of terabytes of data in their live stores and tens of petabytes on tape
and yes they should have an archiving system not just doing tape back up tape
p.S if they used an enterprise email system like lotus domino this would not be a problem after all thats what the CIA uses

why not just use Lotus domino on a variety of Linux platforms and if you really must an outlook client , this works out of the box

a pump storage facility which pumps water up a hill is operational in wales and connected to the national grid in the UK
it is used to balance out extreme loads reacting quickly to smooth out demand so that more power stations are not kept idling
