So you are generally assuming that atm's are only for people in cars? Does your atm deny you if you are on foot, or if you are not the driver of the car? ATM machines having braile has absolutely zero to do with blind people being qualified to drive. I really do not see how that link can be made. Maybe im too skeptical, please explain......

  3. "Higher" Education? on Cheating Via the Internet at College · · Score: 1

It really seems to me at least, after 4 years of poly sci and history undergrad at an average state U (University of Iowa)that the only thing "higher" in higher ed is the general student body, well that and tuition each year, lol
Seriosuly though, the problem I have is not that TA's teach so many classes, at least at Iowa once you get into sophmore level classes you are at least going to get a fauclty member teaching the majority of the class. My true resentment is that so many teachers have started using attendance policies that are unduly severe, for example in several of my classes it has been 3 unexcused misses and you fail. In theory if the teacher has truly releavnt insightfull material to lecture on you should be motivated to show up because the material will be on the test or because the instructor is generally good at what they do. What has happened repeatedly in my experience is that instead, the teacher, a fully qaulified faculty memeber, will literally read the powerpoint outline for the hour long class, then post it on the internet, and still fail you if you do not sit there and listen to them speak it.
IMHO that is a travesty, if i can learn the material on my own why does the teacher need the ego boost of me sitting in front of him/her, especially since i have paid for the class anyway. This level of education is rapidly turning into high-school style babysitting, while making sure to as little intensive coursework as possible for the student and the teacher.

good point, BUT Just because there is a computer in every room does not mean that students have access to it. I was in Junior High when president Clinton pushed through the initiative to hook every classroom to the internet. This is fine and dandy, but the school that I was in was very adamant in making sure students did not use these computers for anything. This also contiuned when I was in High School. In both instances the only computer access for the general student population was the main computer lab which in both cases had about 30 computers. If a teacher happened to sign it out for the period/day other students were simply out of luck. On a side note what really irked me is that in my particualr situation most of the teachers did nothing on these computers except attendance, check email and grades(once a semseter). This coupled with the fact that the software they used(SIS) was prone to crash quite often which meant that attendance (and sometimes grades) was done by hand thereby eliminating the benefit of having the computers there in the first place.

I totally understand your point, that companies are looking at this from a cost anaylis point of view, but what about normal citizens? Following this reasoning citizens have no ability to live anywhere because they are always under the threat of having their homes taken by eminent domain. Also, not to troll but it wa pointed out earlier that they spend twice as much on advertising as on research. this is very hard to define but at some point people along with corps need to take pesonal and social responsibility. If a company is in a position that society needs it , which i think that most prescription drugs fit into this category, then society (by way of govt) needs to make these compaines realize that they are responsible for society. They should be allowed to make a profit, but i should mean someting tht they are in charge of something tht society needs and should not hold everyone ransom as a response.

Have you ever watched cable tv? the special subscription channels like HBO have some decentthings on, but normal cable service is as ad-ridden as a college newspaper. Part of the orginal reasoning for cable/satellite was to watch programming without ads, though at a cost.

The massive popularity of cable and satellite created a market for advertising, that and people were content with having multiple channels to choose from, they didnt ssem to realise or care thatads started creeping in, and then came in droves.the appeal of things like TiVo is that you can watch programs without ads, yet there has been talk of making illegal to block ads on a tivo.
Why is there spam in your email?
The fact is that when people adopt a medium to communicate, that single action opens it up to advertising and the exchange of views/preferences/advocations.

Quote: The students don't actually think of learning as a good thing. It's just something they were told they have to do. So in the end even with college grads we end up with [on average from what I've seen] really stupid, unmotivated greedy induhviduals.

I really think that you have hit on a good point. A large part of the the problem in American Education is that Students are expected to act responsibly and make decisions for themsleves but are given very little chance to actually do that. Requirements in most schools are set up as to do most, if not all of the curriculum selection for the student.

Also, if you are trying to teach a person responisbility, but you keep that person under lockdown and try to make every important decision that relates to them and their schooling, then you are not giving them a chance to act responsibility on their own. People are unmotivated and lost because they have had nearly their entire life scholastically, and behaviorially dictated to them .
My solution? I think that High school should function more like college, You should have basic requirements but give students a freer hand in determining their education. Also let them set their own time schedule for the day. It would mean that some need more advising, but it would let students have a better unerstanding of why they are in school, and give them a more enjoyable time doing it. If they dont come to class then they accept the consequenses for it, they do poorly in class or fail.

If schools are going to contiue to be treated as day care facilities, is it any surprise that the people in the schools get as much out of it as being in day care?

That is a good point, but with the way that redistricting has been going in a large # of states, most of them do not have to worry about re-elections unlss they publicly screw up really bad. I'm sure some of you remember the fiasco that went on in texas, or the fact that only somewhere around 20 house seats are seriosuly contested each election. Not only are we losing our rights as consumers, but the system is being rigged so that we have no control over the media and content that we spend our money on, and no effective way to change it if we live in the wrong district. I know the arguament has been/will b made that we have a choice not to buy, the problem is that if this trend continues there will be no choice in the marketplace, Big Media (riaa/mpaa/ect.. will haev enough influence and control that they will be telling you exactly what you can buy and how you can use it, and eventually that if you refuse to give them your money, that you are doing soemthing illegal, but more ominously that if they have their way, there simply will not be choice, you will buy their product or go home empty-handed. The more that this is allowed to happen the more it will continue to happen, if they can do it with movies and cd's theyre not going to stop untill everything that you ever buy is owned by them. We are rapidly losing our rights, and the ability to gain them back. this should be a wake up call to anyone who cares about having a government that is responsive to the people. Think about it for a minute, if the system did work, then how are we in a situation where most mainstream media and content comes from a very small collection of organizations that arent held accountable for anything, coupled wit hthe fact that most national politicains do not have to worry greatly about re-elcetion. Things might be a lot different If they actually had to get re-elected and defend things like INDUCE to a public that wasn't being manipulated by those same media interests, but o-well. Someday we'll be telling our grandchildren about the good ol days, when we had consumer and poltical rights. Alright, no more rant. thanks for bearing with me =)

Companies/corps are going to pick whatever works best for them and adapt/change with it to their needs and Gov't should do the same. if the security was as bad as the article implies it to be, then why havent we seen any catastophic security failures on any of the open source systems currently being used by fortune 500 and Gov't. Hell, it couldn't be any worse than the MS systems in use.

One thing that has troubled me with this whole fiasco is that in nearly all mainstream press and discusion there has been no question of the "lost sales" statistics. I do realise that many of the multi-nats in the RIAA own a lot of the press but you would think that after awhile someone, at least me, would want the RIAA to prove that, someone was actually going to spend money on the song/cd that was downloaded. It doesnt really make it right but if people are downloading becasue they're not going to pay, then the RIAA doesn't have a real claim to have lost anything.
