This is the reason that we should all have crap-detectors set on high whenever evaluating ANY study...or any media used as a single source of information.

Someone owns every media outlet that exists...by it's very nature, it is impossible to be impartial. However, this is ok. This is how it's been since the beginning of news media. It is incumbent upon us to corroborate information and to value-judge what we read in print, watch on tv, or hear on the radio.

Use several sources. Usually the truth lies somewhere in the middle of all of them.

Not to belabor it, but my ipod hasn't skipped once in 2 years of heavy use, fits in my pocket, and recharges when I plug it in to my PC every night.

How much did you pay for your two players? When they first came out, I thought it'd be cool to have something small, lightweight, and compact to play music, but was very much put off by the price to capacity ratio.

    You're exactly right...smaller, faster, cheaper...well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

Do people actually buy the "high end" flash players? I know there's a whole market for them, but I for one don't know anyone who owns one because the capacity has always sucked. I know lotsa people (Mac and anti-Mac alike) that drool over the ipod because it holds lotsa music. The people that I know that don't own an ipod all scoff at the idea of paying more for less. The new form factor WILL overtake the old, but as is the Apple model, not until they stick it to the early adopters.

I don't buy the argument that it's "competitive within it's market". It's market is mp3 players. Slice it thinner to make a point if you'd like, but finding a way to get people to pay more for less is the classic business dream...kudos to and shame on Apple for being able to do it again and again and again.

I definately understand how the investment works and am happy that the original Big Mac was built for that very reason. I'm just talking about the upgrade...why now? Tons of people are elated about the original effort here in the state, but the upgrade isn't even newsworthy here unless you're talking about what it's going to cost.

The research/grant money does end up coming out of the state's general budget...if it's not given by a private or corporate donor, it's tax money. It might hit a different line item on VT's budget, but it all comes from the state.

And for the record, I'm happy and concerned.

Prestige, supercomputing power, and achievement aside, as a Virginia taxpayer I'm wondering why upgrade so soon. We have a huge budget shortfall this year and other educational programs (read: high school core learning programs) are taking it on the chin.

I'll admit I'm not an Apple fan, but I was glad to see VT take such an aggressive stance and build the Big Mac when they did. It did all the right things for all the right reasons...but why upgrade now? It's chic, but at the risk of sounding ultra-liberal, is it worth a few history and math teachers' jobs?
