  1. Re:We have a winner on Privacy Complaint Against Google's GMail Service · · Score: 1
Who is the authority that makes invasion of privacy "wrong"? You? The government?

If parents are responsible for their kids and to supervise them properly go through their personal items for drugs? Is that "wrong" or responsible parenting? Or what about tabloids/photographers/reporters who invade celebrity lives for their pocketbooks or notoriety? Is that "wrong" or simply journalism? What about husband/wife that suspects the other is having an affair and sets a private detective on their trail? "Wrong" or smart? How about a significant other who has learned through going through their mate's medical records that he/she has AIDS? Is that "wrong" or could you call it self defense?

These questions and scenarios are not meant to be answered by an individual, a panel of peers or even a government. "WRONG" is a moral issue and what was wrong yesterday may be right for some today and vice versa. What is wrong for you can be right for someone else.

In regards to the original analogy in question, to me, it does seem silly... whether it's "wrong" or not is a different matter.

If developers choose to create cut scenes to be seen in all their glory, they can create and store ROQ files so they are played as they should be seen. This is no different than an MPEG file. I believe you are getting confused with real-time cut scenes as a playback demo which do have the issue of not looking right if there are graphics issues. Though this latter method is not as popular among top tier developers today, it does have the advantage of lower file sizes if size is an issue.

Personally, I prefer to see in-game cinematics vs. CGI because it isn't as jarring a transition during sequences in-and-out of the game. One of the things that I disliked about the old Final Fantasy games were the crude game environment interspersed with gorgeous CGI cut scenes. The illusion is broken and the sense of emersion is a bit lost. I'm glad the newer Final Fantasy games are using in-game cinematics. Visually, it just flows better.

Not much of an accomplishment there buddy, so is most of the world. Now, if you were bigger, that'd be something to talk about... but then most people would talk about how you need to get your ass to a gym and stop eating Torgo's Pizzas.

Everybody can be a wiseass. Most of us just don't waste too much time on it.

    My review of this review:

In a desperate attempt to sound knowledgeable, an amateur reviewer of films delves into an imaginary universe with comparisons of what he knows to exist in his reality. His lackluster attempt to correlate animation and fantasy with real life occurrences leave the reader wondering if he lives in a super sped up world where plants grow in 7 or so minutes.

It's a good thing this reviewer does not earn a living thorough reviews, god forbid a comparison of Lion King to his real world... the review would include paragraph after paragraph about how animals don't talk, how lions have better things to do than spend time with ONE lioness and ONE cub, and how apes don't do half the things they did in the movie. Sadly, one can't help but be reminded of Quayle's attempt at bashing the fictional Murphy character as a "poor mother".

As a reviewer, on a scale from 1-10, I give him an appalling -1. As a comic hopeful, I give him a 7.

The writer would have served readers interested in viewing machinima better by telling them that it was not his type of story, that he found the download a waste of his time, but that the end result showed off a fairly good engine. A better reviewer would have confessed that despite the many who had enjoyed it, he found it unenjoyable due to his lack of imagination.

  6. Side Effects on Sweet Dreams Are Made By This · · Score: 1
I wonder how much, if any, research has been done on potential side effects of dream manipulation.

I personally know of two people who are sleep walkers/talkers that have extremely odd dream walking experiences... to the point of dangerous. One time one of these guys tried to strangle his wife in his sleep - needless to say, the marriage didn't work out. The other dude walked out of his house, dropped his blanket on his driveway then returned to bed.

Milder, but still dangerous, is when a woman dreams that the man is cheating, wakes up, and pummels the poor fool lying next to her... what a nightmare to wake up to!!! Ugh, the horrific possible endless combinations of these scenarios are endless. "... but officer, I didn't know what I was doing... I was dreaming and didn't realize I'd chopped off his penis till blood gushed all over the place!" *shiver*

Seems that with so little facts known about the dream state, trying to manipulate dreams seems a bit spooky.

Paul Allen is revealed as the sponser of Rutan's effort -- total cost, about $20MM

It is estimated that Paul Allen has spent at least $30million on Rutan's efforts thus far. It wouldn't be surprizing if at the end of the day $50million (or more) was spent towards Rutan's entire project.

  8. Re:well on Paul Allen Confirmed as SpaceShipOne's Sponsor · · Score: 1
Paul has spent a whole heck of a lot more than $10 million on this project and is expected to spend a lot more.

Rutan's team is the only one that has the financial backing which allows them to spend more than the prize money to win the XPRIZE. All other teams are working towards the same goal but with a drastically lower budget. Nevertheless, working with $30-$50 million to win $10 million is a lot better than simply failing, which several other companies in the past have done with higher budgets.

Though it would be nice to see the underdogs win, if Rutan and Allen win, it'll still be a good thing and definitely a move in the right direction.

    3. Katherine Anna Kang was not "kicked out" of id but rather quit, was asked back, declined, and started her own company.
