  1. No "embrace & extend" as long as Sun controls it. on Sun Withdraws Java from Standards Process · · Score: 1

I was always worried about Sun taking Java to
    a "standards commitee".

What better way for Microsoft to "embrace and
extend" and eventually destroy Java than by gaining eventual control over such a commitee? Sun is only trying to prevent Microsoft from getting any toehold. Can't blame 'em a bit.

Sun has given away many innovations. Not
Microsoft. I can't blame Sun at all for wishing to be "keeper of the flame". The best way to keep any vision pure is to keep it out of the hands of a commitee.

  2. Re:Drop CORBA on On Coding Multiplatform Distributed Systems... · · Score: 1

    I agree. IDL means "Compile".
    "Compile" means "Test".
"Test" means time and money down the toilet.
Lotta pain. Little gain. When it's hard to
adjust systems, kludges and work-arounds become
common. Then those systems become a nightmare.

    I think you would love
    "Dynamic Data Objects for Java(tm)"
if you don't want to compile even
when elements are added. I can
    add checkboxes and datafields to
    data objects, corresponding
    "alter table add column..." statements
in the database, and add a few table
entries pointing to element names of
the new data. Then a resync, and
it's running... (Didn't see the "Compile"
    word did you?)...

After using this inexpensive and simple
toolkit for Java why in the heck would I
ever want to go through CORBAtion again?

  3. Hire a telecommuting contractor/consultant on Ask Slashdot: Employees or Contractors? · · Score: 1

First of all I agree with the post that says that 80% of all contractors are bad. I, as a contractor, have cleaned up after them but also have cleaned up after many bad employees also. I remember stapling some bad contractor code on the wall of a large corporation and every time they questioned my higher rate I would point to the crap on the wall. They got the message.

Now I mainly do telecommuting from my own office. The good aspect of that is that, rather than a contractor who gets whisked off to another contract somewhere after your contract is finished, I am continuously available for further design, analysis, typically some mentoring & technochat, and any fixes. As a result, most of my business is "word-of-mouth" and I have long term relationships with clients.

One thing I've avoided as a contractor due to earlier experiences 15 years ago is to 1) avoid stupid shortcuts like "hard coding" of any type, 2) avoid utopia (i.e. use of the most bleeding edge technology usually accompanied with moving-target-specifications), 3) Go for tool sets and core skills rather than all-embracing "magic applications" and 4) make things modular so that portions of a system can be removed and substituted for but with minimal operational impact. This makes for easy coherent maintenance.

Another thing is that if you're having to make all data element changes to your OO Java(tm) code (i.e. get and set methods for each element) or having to by hand put and get elements from your JDBC work, or having to go through an IDL compilation step there's something called Dynamic Data Objects(tm) which eliminates all that.

I've done a POS before and also have a CC
    authorization product on the market.

There are many factors. How many POS stations
per location? What kind of wanding device have
you picked out? How many transactions per day?
    How many locations?

You will need high availability clients that
can shift to multiple servers if one or more
servers go down, database on RAID... I see
lots of testing in your future if you wish to
    insure a high-availability system.

  5. Katz, the epiome of moral degradation in "America" on Feature: Ticket Booth Tyranny (Part One) · · Score: 1

Katz is the epitome of what's wrong with the
    morals of "America".

    1. He lied about being a pastor to help get the kids
into the movie. He has proven himself to
be cut out of the same cloth as the lying
    politician: Bill Clinton.

    Anyway, no self respecting pastor
should ever even be seen in such theatres for
these reasons: 1) It downgrades the morals of
the pastor, desensitizing at best the attitude
toward sex. 2) It would tend to inflame the
passions of such a pastor especially if that
pastor is celibate and/or single. 3) It causes
scandal. 4) It is tantamount to giving the
"go ahead" to others to view such trash.

    2. He seems to think or implies
    that pornography and smut
are ok and are a right of kids. Unfortunately,
the new world religion of secular humanism is
inclusive of such a philosophy. When I was
growing up I was taught that more people would
go to Hell for sins against the 6th and 9th
commandment in this century. With respect to
    pollution of children's morals scripturally
speaking "it would be better if a millstone
be hung around his neck and he be cast into the
    sea". (paraphrased from New Testament)

    3. Worse yet is the argument that since the
kids who wish to can get access to such filth
anyway why fight it? Let's apply that absurd
argument to drugs: Since kids can get drugs
anyway (if they really wanted to) let's legalize
    drugs.

    4. He is hardly libertarian with respect to
respecting the wishes and policies of a privately
    owned movie theatre.

It's too bad that Katz didn't get busted.
It might have been a wake up call.

Other comments related to statements made by
    Katz and my comments.

    1. Europe is in much worse shape morally and
politically. So who cares if the USA is the
laughing stock of them. "Lot" and his family
was the laughing stock in Sodom. Anyhow, since
when should we decide what's right or wrong
based on ridicule by others. Any man that
caves in due to ridicule by others shows himself
to be a moral whimp, afraid, deep down, to do
what's right. In this post-Woodstock society
it's politically correct to bash any attempt at
censorship or reversing the moral slide.
Hardly the courageous stand. Since courage
essentially means "to stand alone" it seems
more and more difficult to find men with
the testicular fortitude to stand up and
be courageous about admitting that the
permissive society has failed miserably and
that it's time to reverse the trends that
have caused: killing (abortion), the post
    abortion syndrome that women experience,
STD (sexually transmitted diseases) and the
misery caused by AIDS, inability for women to
have children, financial losses due to time and
money spent to treat diseases, and, worst of
all, losses of unrepentant souls sent for to the eternal pit.

    2. Any attempt by parents to restore the
Ten Commandments in schools and censor
what video stores may sell or rent is the
start of a realization by parents that
that a wide open permissive morality has
hurt, not helped civilization. Freedom of
speech was never intended by the founding
forefathers of the US to include pornography
and smut as evidenced by the laws against such
that existed when this country (US) was first
formed. To consider pornography as free
speech is a relatively new invention
sanctioned by a liberal packed Supreme Court
which has usurped the constitutional rights of
the US Citizens to govern themselves. When
citizens cannot legislate for themselves, the
standards that they wish to uphold due to
interference by Judicial Activism, then this
country (US) amounts to nothing more than
Judicial Tyranny. So much for true libertarianism!
