no troll.. simply an observation. i am a parent. not implying anything, but i was more thinking along the lines of "what will they think of next" ... not a personal shot at anyone, so if you took offense, i cant really apologize since that's not the way it was intended.

it may not be unethical to some. while encouraging the education of science is good, it's also important to not put ideas in the minds of children that they may not understand. depending on what age the kid is, will determine how these things are interpreted. i personally think that too much knowledge introduced to children at a young age could be dangerous.

all i want for christmas is the ignorance to be gone from the world, for tech support to always know my answers, and for my freakin' slackware server to run centericq and connect to ALL the protocols ALL the time. i want a toilet that works all the time, neighbors that dont play Robert Palmer from 2AM-4AM as loud as possible, and friends who call me even when they DONT have questions about computers. i want a boyfriend who will ALWAYS be sensitive and caring, and who will rub my feet when i get home from work, and children that will cook dinner and wait on me hand and foot.and for the supermarket workers to stop striking so that life can return to normal.

realizing i'll never have it because i dont believe in santa clause is possibly one of the most depressing things ever.

  4. The worse of two evils? on Netscape-Branded ISP Launching February 2004 · · Score: 1, Insightful

Ok, so forgive me for saying so.. but instead of fighting fire with fire, doesn't anyone think that perhaps AOL should refrain from branding their bundled version of netscape? It seems to me that the only way to truly get more customers/computer users interested in using a product is to offer non-branded, fully functional applications and utilities?

It seems to me that more and more people are searching for alternatives to Microsoft's Internet Explorer. This is mostly users who browse with GUIs under linux, and people who use browsers like Mozilla and Mozilla Firebird. We will always miss the days of Phoenix, and browsers that offered interfaces that had neat bells and whistles that are built on every year.. but let's not forget where they came from..

I think one of the only reasons that most people even still use Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, is because it's the familiarity and reliability that it's going to be there. Not only that, but with IE being integrated the way it is with Windows, it generally works faster, regardless of the number of errors. Additionally, the plug-ins for javascript and flash are built in, and easier to install and maintain than in other 'advanced' browsers.

I think the smart thing is this.. find out from the consumer what they'd like to see in their browser menubar. If they say they like the AOL brand, keep it.. but I am relatively certain that the majority of users will agree having an option would be best.. give the user a menu option to determine what icon they're going to be looking at for the next 10 hours while they surf through site after site.

Beautifully said.. It's about damned time that Verisign (formerly Network Solutions) gets it's huge corporate head out of the asses of the pocket-padded executives that run it.

For years NS/Verisign has been trying to convince the public that they must pay ridiculous amounts of money for services that they can get cheaper, and to do the same thing.

I know that the corporate pigs at Verisign dont give a damn about what the consumer wants. If they were so concerned about it, they wouldnt be analyzing stuff in-house, they would be requesting feedback, and the general public would actually see some results.

So domains aren't free.. what is it going to take for the general public (who work twice as hard for their money) to be able to afford what we're already working hard for?

Okay, so people like apache.. and people dont. I think it's a great product, if it does what you need it to. Sometimes it may be better to use a windows-based server, but I haven't found a reason yet. It's worth the cost of chilisoft if you need asp that badly, and to be honest, more people should be learning php and perl and other languages that yeild a much more efficient return.

I read a post here earlier where a user was trying to copy a file, and attempted to place blame on apache for the length of time that it was taking to copy a file. I hate to break it to you, my friend, but rarely is software responsible for throughput.

I get all the help I need from google, and friends, and I don't have a problem trying things until they work. In the last 7 months I have been converted from a windows user, to a linux girl. I am not ashamed, and I think everyone should try it.

I know that this section of slashdot doesnt get much attention, but maybe if more people were willing to share their secrets, as the rest of the linux community goes, we would be a bit sore in the eye from all the posts here.

If apache wasn't a great idea, why would they port it to windows at all?

Just a few of my thoughts...

by the way.. apachecon prices are bit high.. but i think that it weeds out the defcon drunks from the serious system and web administrators.

...that way, everyone can see everyone else's information.. honestly, folks.. it's getting to the point where trust is becoming an issue for most software distributors.

I don't have a problem with software being disabled for users who are installing/using a pirated application/utility.. I DO have a problem with servers collecting information that they have no business collecting.

Also, after having proxomitron running on my laptop for months, found out that it logs and transmits to Microsoft every time I play a DVD... I honestly thing this has been going on for quite some time, and it should really NOT be all that surprising.

People get paid to write this kind of software.. isn't there someone out there who has time to write something that will filter all requests not originating from a user's command? I'm a little too lazy to do it and would rather have something to bitch about, but if someone else wants to take on that challenge.. go for it.. just don't port it to windows.. I'm almost inclined to think that built-in spyware can be expected there...

    Peace.

I can't really say much about the Gentoo installation. I began installing it and gave up out of frustration. For now, I'm pretty satisfied with Slackware, and I'll probably continue running it until it becomes too intolerable. My experiences with OBSD and FBSD weren't so bad, and if I ever have an extra machine laying around doing nothing, I may feel adventuresome enough to try it again. :)

I am really sick of watching these corporate politicians try to yank more money from the public for projects that began as free. It is disgusting that any companies out there would try to base a profit off of Linux distribution sales. It's even less likely that after reading this I will ever even attempt at purchasing, downloading, or wasting my time with Red Hat OR SuSE. I am a relatively new user to linux, but have only been using Slackware. Many people boast it's stability, many people blame evolution for the faults it continues to slip into each generation of this distro. I will never again attempt at installing Gentoo, Red Hat, or SuSE, mostly because the bloated methods used to install mean that I may not be getting what I actually want. I am not about bashing other types of OS' regardless of who might own a distribution company... and I'll say this much. Try it, and if you dont like it, don't use it. I was never really happy with the bloated SuSE to begin with, so it's kind of a relief that I have another justification to line up behind my own personal experiences... just a few words of wonderment from this linuxchick....
