  1. :IT != Electricity on Long Term Effects of Outsourcing · · Score: 1

Yes, you are using the same database, same compiler, and same OS, but if you look upon this as a pure commodity, you are very very shortsighted.

The company that uses IT as a strategic advantage will do much better than the company that does not. Right now we just made the basic components: we have a database, OS, and compiler. Now we have much bigger issues to deal with: what do we do with these things?

We can make decision support software. Custom applications to data mine a company's data so that they can make better decisions. An example of this is Harrah's who used a data mining program to determine the best place to place things in its casinos. The possibilities are endless because people will continue to innovate, and future innovation will require more custom applications.

One more difference between electricity and IT: a device that I bought 5 years ago does work today. A program was written 5 years ago for windows 98 might not work on Windows XP. Things do become obsolete and require reworking in IT. Yes, you can hold on to your IBM AS/400s forever, but you will also have to pay a staff a LOT more money on upkeep in the long run than if you can upgrade to better and more open systems.

Well, we would have to put them out of business so that we can have some way to do business with them. If you take away manufacturing AND design, what is America going to do? At least if we put their agriculture out of business, we would at least have some sort of export.

This is why we need limited protections from the government. While, globalization will in the long run bring other countries up, we must make sure it does not bring us down. This is even more of a threat now that jobs which require degrees are now being outsourced as opposed to high school educated manufacturing jobs. We cannot simply completely retrain everyone all of the time.

We need protections requiring 50-75% of jobs requiring college degrees to be kept in the U.S. Limited protections will allow smart globalization.

Who needs actual war when we can have an economic war. If the U.S. government let American farmers produce as much grain as they could, it would single handedly put farmers worldwide out of business. We could put half of India's economy out of business.

  6. Re:Isn't American labour cheap? on IBM Moving Developer Jobs Overseas · · Score: 1

This has nothing to do with the amount of developers. It has everything to do with the cost of living in the United States. If an American developer gets paid $10,000 a year, s/he cannot even eat for a year. I would be glad to work for $10,000 a year if my food costs would come around $1050, and my transportation could come around $500, and I could buy a new car for $5,000.
