I agree, it should be possible to play your own music while playing any game.
Oh, and how about some basic media management functionality like play-lists, genre grouping, and ratings. The interface that is there is great if you have 10 movies and 30 songs, but I have over 1000 songs and nearly 40 movies on my PS3 already, with no means of grouping them to my liking...
The original "toilet seat" ibook was designed by Lunar (www.lunar.com), which Brunner founded. You'll have to do the timeline math yourself to figure out if he was still at Lunar when they unleashed that monstrosity.
This kind of "home manufacturing" using RP is nothing new. Everyone who uses an RP machine for the first time thinks of that.
The primary reason why this would never happen on a significant scale was the threat of litigation. Taking manufacturing and more importantly, quality control, out of the hands of Corporations would give their customers too many opportunities to sue them.
P2P sharing of product designs would of course also be devastating to such a business model.
