Now, if I had known about the date workaround, I'd have used that instead. I didn't know, so I found another solution. At no point was I "whining", as you characterise it. In fact, I was a satisfied customer after removing the nag screen.
Yes, but you had to (illegally) use a crack code to do it, and you made a point of complaining that Apple forced you to this action. "Is it illegal? I don't care." Well, then, get over it. There's nothing in the EULA or advertising for OS X that says you have to be free from annoyance and adware, so your choice to steal software is guided by your own moral compass (your annoyance is more important that Apple being compensated for use of its code).
If you think QuickTime Basic is broken, just wait until you see Preview (which doesn't support all the PDF features that Acrobat does) or Mail.app (which isn't a full-featured Exchange client).
Just because you paid for the OS doesn't mean that everything in it does everything you want for $0.00 forever and ever. If you don't want the QT Pro features and just want not to be nagged, use the date workaround and quit whining.
Are you a nincompoop? Quite frankly, I don't care.:-)
I ran into the same problem but it cleared up after:
reinstalling X11 via download from Apple (Fink attempt to install the GIMP had wiped it out)
installing X11 SDK from "Packages" folder of Xcode install CD
wiping out & recompliling Fink & Darwinports installs (including the/sw and/opt/local target directories, which had some ownership issues)
I then proceeded to happily & peacefully install the GIMP 1.2.5 via DarwinPorts -- smooth sailing all the way. I am officially a DarwinPorts fan now; not as much detailed feedback as Fink but it "just works" (after two days of hair-pulling).
Sorry it sounded that way to you, but I am a real person, not a marketdroid. Just got overexcited.
Claimer: I was fired by AOL Time Warner (Life Magazine) over three years ago. I have no interest in Time Warner Cable except as an overcharged customer.
Far less money than what? How much is your time worth on an hourly basis? Is building and supporting your own home-rolled DVR hardware going to take you less than one hour a month?
Either you don't make more than $10 an hour (in which case you can't afford cable television) or the pure pleasure of spending effort, sweat and tears building it yourself in your incredibly copious spare time is more important to you than, say, watching fine AOL Time Warner programming anytime you want for $10 a month.
(Pausing the Daily Show now. sweeeet.)
Personally, I would encourage you to build your own DVR, but don't force me to build one for myself. I'd never get around to it... too busy learning to use all those otherHTML tags.

Gnome2 is also available through DarwinPorts, FWIW.

it may say 1.0 on the package, but it's still beta.
double-posting by accident! argh. beta browsers are irksome.

again, FWIW. I know Adelphia and Optimum interfaces do have ads and look crappy besides. TW interface is pretty clean and no ads.

Sorry to get yinz hopes up.
Scientific Atlanta FAQ says that no channel choice or program info goes upstream from the box to the provider. FWIW.
