Could it be that Hollywood already feels the effects of long term copyright?

Make a science fiction movie that mentions 'the planet Vulcan' and Paramount will come down on you for violating their copyright on Star Trek. If its referencing the 'space colony Vulcan', the lawyers of Chris Bunch and Allen Cole are sure to show up with their suit for infringing on the intellectual property 'inherent in the 'Sten' universe'. Studios release sequels/prequels/sidequels to their own copyrighted 'franchises' because it's cheaper than licensing somebody else's.

The ribbon is a bit of a learning curve. So is Linux itself. But most people seem to forget there's a learning curve to Windows itself, no matter what version. It's never been 100% intuitive and it never will. Every user has to learn and adapt themselves to whichever interface they use. None of this stuff comes naturally yet.

Just CTRL-ALT-F1 to a shell, log in and 'sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop', let it churn away, hit ALT-F7 to go back to your gui, log out, select LXDE for your new login session, and you'll have a desktop that's useable.

    Harper is smart,

Harper's handlers are smart. Intelligence is not a prerequisite for public office in modern politics. In fact, it can backfire on you. Given the choice between a photogenic meat puppet and somebody that knows what's going on, a party tends to pick the meat puppet every time. They're easier to control, and having them on point distracts the masses and lets the government get on about it.

This is the problem with representative democracy, the best lying marketer wins.

That's the problem with popularity contests. Bigger problem is, the other systems seem to be even worse. Democracies demand an informed electorate in order to work halfways decently. With modern campaign methods bordering on downright black propaganda, and with educational values slipping in the US at least, it's just this side of impossible to have an informed electorate.

EMI probably knew that this was the probable outcome --- which explains why they repeatedly tried to add Michael Robertson as a personal defendent. Looks to me that Big Media has had it in for him ever since he proved, with the original mp3.com website, that good music could be generated and distributed without them.

Adding Michael to the suit as a personal defendent would open up way too many doors as the whole point of a corporation is to limit personal liability in case of suit. EMI doesn't want to be individually and collectively liable for its actions, just collectively. Problem is, they wanted to make an example out of Michael for having the audacity to actually pay indy musicians royalties on their songs. Can't have that, thus, this suit. Somebody stuffing an EMI controlled recording on his site was just the excuse.

This kind of legal sophistry is rarer in Canada, because the cops can simply detain you for "breach of the peace" (which is not itself an offence, and such detainment does not constitute an arrest).

Kinda like 'enemy combatants' aren't military, civilian, or quasimilitary but something else entirely, $DEITY knows what, and Camp Xray isn't a military prison, holding facility, extreme rendition endpoint, detention center, or tropical resort but something else entirely.

Here in the States, 'breach of the peace' is an indictable offense. Expect the Canadian position on it to change soon.

So those reports of the FBI infiltrating leftist groups in the 60's and encouraging them to run rampant is just an urban myth, eh? Even after the paid informants came forward and admitted it and the Freedom of Information Act filings confirmed it before all got redacted? What gets me the most is that the media reported the election fraud. With all the government love by the media, I'm surprised at that. Did somebody not get the proper payoff and decided to burn the house down or something?
