ARM still offers significant discounts on their development systems to universities and research organizations (hardware platforms, compilers, etc.) Between November of last year and June, ARM was without a university relations manager to coordinate all research activity, to help with undergraduate and graduate sponsorships, and to work with students on various ARM-related projects (the 'favours' you spoke of). ARM continues to encourage and sponsor programs in both undergraduate and graduate curriculae worldwide; however, this is a large task and often takes time.
