  1. The E Ring? on Videogame Character Threatens National Security? · · Score: 1

    What is the E Ring?

  2. it's like the military ... on Correlation Between Stress and Technology? · · Score: 1

In the old days, you could, you know, master like fifteen books of strategy and four hundred historical battles and two or three weapons and that was it -- from there on out it was just you.

And now war is so much more complicated and the Pentagon is saying stuff like there's a Moore's law for war and with a new technology every minute we can be X much more efficacious offensively ... so technology has created all this change that makes it so much more difficult to find a fulfilling path to skill and knowledge.

Although I suppose that was always the case. Change is change. Imagine how stressed out some craftsman must have been in the middle of the industrial revolution -- not only has his productivity been dwarfed, but his skills have been invalidated. It's like a kick in the face to the culture that's been passed down to this poor hypothetical guy from like, fifty generations ago.

Whereas at least in today's workplace many core skills remain the same, as we increase our productivity (though some skills are becoming invalidated). And we're not as grounded in our work, not as culturally attached to it as this pre-industrial craftsman, so it's harder to shock us.

  3. totally replacing cameras? on Gillette Pulls RFID Tags In UK Amid Protests · · Score: 1

This could mean the end of in-store cameras! If retailers could track their stuff, there would be little need to take pictures unless something was being disturbed. And they would need to wheigh you on the way in and out to make sure you haven't left a bomb or something in their store.

    ... Not that they would.

    Guys, guys.

I think you're hitching on the difference between "not guilty" and "innocent." I'm no lawyer, but I would say that the atrny gen's quote assumes that "innocent" is completely not implicated, and "not guilty" is implicated but proven free of wrongdoing.

  5. flash com server on Implementing Intercom-like Videoconferencing? · · Score: 1

You might want to check out macromedia's "flash communication server." It's supposedly rather easy to customize and although costs money to buy, will work with any computer with a flash plugin web browser.

Macromedia's product blurb indicates that the product is very capable of multi-way video and stuff.
