  1. Keeping our eye on the ball! on Pre-Election Discussion · · Score: 0

We Americans are way too involved with ourselves. Witness the press reviews of the last Bin Laden video. Bin Laden didn't make an appearance for our benefit. He didn't do it to hurt the president or help Senator Kerry. Bin Laden did it for his own benefit.

Yes, having President Bush turned out of office after a rebuke from Bin Laden will enhance Bin Laden's stature amongst the radical Arab and Islamic populations. But President Bush is the best recruitment poster for Islamic fundamentalists; Bin Laden wins either way. In fact the only way Bin Laden couldn't win is if President Bush had captured or killed him years ago. Bin Laden would be stupid to get rid of President Bush.

But we know Bin Laden isn't stupid. He's coldly brilliant and methodical as he pursues his goal to become the dominate leader of the Islamic world.

So what was Bin Laden's real motivation behind his latest video? Consider, at this time the Palestinian leadership mantle is up for grabs. Hamas is under daily attacks; being a Hamas leader is close to asking for an Israeli missile to visit your home. The PLO has no method to pick a new leader. Like Saddam Hussein, Arafat kept his lieutenants weak. This leadership gap could be the role Bin Laden has been waiting for.

If Bin Laden became the leader of the Palestinian people, say it's prime minister or president, then there are international laws which could protect him from American retribution. He could live in the Gaza strip, direct activities against Israeli (much like Arafat has) while working on his real goal, Saudi Arabia.

Overturning the Saud family with the backing of 3 million Palestinians could make him Caliph. The hint of Saud oil wealth, to be directed against Israel, after forcing America to back down or face an oil embargo again, would embolden the Palestinians. The Wahabbists would probably follow Bin Laden anywhere, just like our Christian fundamentalist are doing here; getting behind President Bush, no questions asked.

Americans, get your heads out of Walmart and back to "Pier 1". Our interests are worldwide, not just in Arkansas. See the bigger picture.

Having had to buy larger numbers of dedicated application and db systems, performance matters a lot. Price not as much, but is a factor. Name brand, with technical support factors perhaps above price.

When both performance and price are on the same side, it's hard not to buy those servers. If the Operton 150's were HP/Compaq's or IBM server with a support contract, the Opteron would be a no-brainer.

Maybe it's time for Dell to realize that the advertising kickback isn't worth the loyalty required. "Intel inside" maybe become synonymous with Cadillac: Overpriced and underpowered.

Are Web Tech News sites exempted from good english? There were so many incomplete sentences in the C/Net article that I was shocked. This a 'News' outlet? "Customers are better off today than they were a year ago, and they will be even better off in the future," said Kevin Kean, a group manager at Microsoft's Security Response Center. Run in sentences (look for ' , and '). "The problem is, there is still a wide base of products,". Poorly quoted. There should have been a more complete quote or a '...' at the end of the quote (instead of a comma) to allow readers to complete the sentence on their own. "Security has overshadowed things at the moment," 'things'? How about 'Security has become the priority issue in software upgrades' ? "Security is only one of the four pieces of the Trustworthy Computing". Drop the 'only'. W"hile Slammer affected a product that had been developed prior to the Trustworthy Computing push, MSBlast--also called Blaster--exploited errors missed by the Microsoft reviews." This paragraph is complete trash. It seems to be hinting at improvements, but never says it. How about: The virus 'Slammer' affected all MS products. But those deployed after the Trustworthy Initiative were least impacted and the easiest to patch.

No, a show should logically last about 1 year real time. Let's look at the Cyclons: banished to a new world. After 40 yrs have built a fleet superior to the colonial. Evolved 11 new models (at least 4 humanlike). Have realized with routine backup's that they are immortal. They must have a economy with little of the ancillary components the colonials need (food, water, ships, childern, teachers ....), to have come so far so fast. Also no other enemies to protect against. Let's look at the end of war situation: Cyclons have lost no materials, no worlds, no weapons platforms with the exception of some fighters and only one casualty, an android (unable to upload). Colonials. Minus 12 worlds (? 12 billion people), their entire industrial base. No ongoing food system, no new power sources, no new weapons (they seem to expend weapons at an incredable rate). Limited old fighters. No ... well anything, but the oldest battlestar in their pre war fleet. No safe star maps, and no allies. Now what are the option of each side: Cyclons. Build and deploy FTL scouts. They need report only where they are, where they're jumping to and an traces of the colonial fleet. Once found it wouldn't take the Cyclons anytime to deploy more scouts in a ever widening cloud around the first discovery point. Colonial fleet location wouldn't take that long afterward. Colonials: Deploy FTL fighters as fast and far forward as possible. Distance through empty space is their only hope. Go until your resources are exhausted and you've found a place you can build up to resupply yourselves. Then move forward again. That's assuming the sleep agent Boomer doesn't leave more signal bouys for the Cyclon scouts to find. But that's not enough. As long as the Cyclon have no other enemies to deal with, their ability to deploy new scouts in ever growing numbers will defeat the Colonial efforts. it's just a matter of time.

Not much of a programmer. You can't fix a problem until you understand the problem. In this case the programmer didn't understand the problem. It's not the mail content, but the motive of the sender that needs to be addressed.

Spammers are sending mail to you because it's cost effective. They don't see what they are doing as a problem because it is profitable. Until national and international laws and enforcement make spam unprofitable, it will continue. The problem is not the spammer's to fix.

Therefore the problem belongs to the the receiptant. His first solution begins on his e-mail program. If it doesn't have incoming filters, then he needs one that does.

The second solution is mail download period. When I'm working I turn off the phone. I don't need the interruption. Dido email. It will be there later. Connect when you get coffee and let the email filter's do their jobs.

Assuming this was a home based spam attack, then third solution is to get a real firewall. One you can program to block all access to annoying sites. IPTABLES is a good choice.

If this was corporate mail server, then talk to your boss and/or your sysadmin. Have them add filters on the email server and the firewall. Then change your corporate email address. This last would be easier if company policy was not to use an employee's name for his address (peter.built@mycompany.com, instead of ptb213@mycompany.com). A protected local area directory service (ldap) can then be used to connect real names to e-mail addresses. Making reassignment easy.

But all these solutions require you take on the problem yourself. Spammer's aren't going to fix it for you.
