Currently at the college I attend they have Gigabit for Business and tech park. You need to make sure that the switch is compatiable with your Ethernet controller. Also some of the Gigabit switches require that you go Cat 6 others like 3com are suppose to work fine with Cat 5. For linux/windows you should not have to do any real tweaking. I would say stay away from the 3c2000 for linux unless you want to build your own module or go to 2.6 kernel, and stay away from e1000 if your using some brands of cisco switches.
One more reason to hate cisco equipment. They may have made an name for themselves in the router business, but they need some help in the ethernet and wireless business.
Their switches are garbage for the high price that you pay. You would think that you are getting alot for the money you pay but what you'll is find that you have to buy more just to get same features that are in the 3com and netgear switches at much lower prices. They act like they can write thier own standards and not comform to others. They are the M$ of networking, and this just proves it. I sure the same can be said about Windows *
I think that hardware will never be free. Yeah there maybe services that will provide hardware like DSL modems and cable boxes, but that is not free. There are rental fees attached to those services or contracts which want you to keep the service for time period. In future companies may offer hardware with a service but I bet 1 billion dollars that there will be some form of rental fee attach to said service. Oh and visual programming; nope I don't think so. If every one thought visually then visual programming would work. I think that software maybe free unless it is highly suited to making money and if it's not making money then it should be saving money other wise it will be a video game.
Man that was Cutie. But there is one thing M$ over looked. It cost money to convert from any system to another be it a M$ Office to Open Office or Word Perfect to M$ Office.
I would not every expect Redhat to make a statemnet like that. I love linux. I use it as my primary desktop enviroment. I even converted my wife to linux. I' ve built two clusters which run linux. M$ is okay execpt for the worms, viruses and the reboots. I guess it's gentoo time;>
I see sco is back at giving the computer industry as whole more laughs. I can't wait for this to be made in to a movie. Here hoping it's as funny as "Dumb and Dumber"
What a big waste time of so Peter Gutmann found two programs that are not secure. Gotta ask your self is anyone maintaining them ? Does any one care ? There are few M$ programs that have paid programmers that aren't secure XP, w2k. Need I say more.
Move the Data Center to India.
