There's quite a bit of data to support the idea that the Apollo space program was, in fact, a colosal waste of money with few practical benefits. There are few actual spin-offs from such programs of any practical use to the public. I think these kind of programs are over-hyped by politicians, and as a scientist, I'd much rather see the money go into fruitful scientific endevours.
