  1. McAfee on McAfee Blames Open Source for Botnets · · Score: 1

McAfee's just jealous. They haven't had a decent product since the DOS version of McAfee AV.

  2. Stay away from iRiver H10 on Dealing with Digital Music and Vendor Lock-In? · · Score: 1

The iRiver H10 is one of iRiver's flagship products. If you hate vendor lock in stay far away from this piece of junk. At first glance it's a really beautiful product, crisp screen, nice volume slider, but it has a lot of flaws ranging from physical design flaws to good old vendor lock in. The H10 uses MTP, Media (read Microsoft) Transfer Protocol. Microsoft's MSDN web site seems to indicate that MTP can work on computers running 98/ME...XP, but iRiver has chosen to further lock people into Windows XP, by also requiring Windows Media Player 10, and at least Service Pack 1. (I tried with both, but found it didn't work until I updated to SP2 with a few additional updates). This leaves out Windows 9x-XP (pre SP1 users), MacOS users, Linux users (though I heard there was some chatter about trying to get something that would work with MTP in the kernel, but I think it got shot down because of licensing issues). More on MTP here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/windowsmedia/downloads/d efault.aspx I won't rant about the design flaws, since the issue is vendor lock in, but who's to say that when Vista comes out iRiver won't drop support for the H10? Cheers

  3. Re:Why Linux has no games on Linux on the Tipping Point · · Score: 2, Insightful

I was fortunate enough to buy a few of the Loki games when Loki was still in business. Games like Myth II and Heroes of Might and Magic III are fun, but broke now. HOMM III works, but the alpha map editor pales in comparison to the Windows version - there's always WINE. And while I do have a Transgaming subscription, it hasn't been particularly useful because I'm not a 3D gamer, and I've never been a fan of intense 3D games. Diablo II is about as 3D as I get, and the only reason the Transgaming subscription has paid off. I've shown a number of Windows users Frozen Bubble, people who have gone on to download FB for their Windows system. No, we don't have games on the store shelves, but they're definately out there and people are playing them.

  4. Re: Do they realize... on EU Software Patent Directive Adopted · · Score: 2, Interesting

I was reading an interesting article in a recent issue of eWeek that pointed out the fact that if Open Source development is slowed in Europe, it's entirely plausible that developing nations could surpass the technological innovation in Europe simply because with open standards its possible to move a lot faster. We shouldn't have to push the FUD angle, but it's an interesting point the eWeek article makes.

  5. Re: Happens so often the charge is ridiculous! on Student Logs Teachers Keystrokes · · Score: 1

---[snip]--- misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $2,000 and up to 180 days in jail. This sort of thing has happened before. The problem is so pervasive that the GRE board has switched ---[/snip]--- In fact this kind of thing happens so often that it should barely warrant mention, let alone the threat of a fine and jail time. What computer-oriented youth hasn't at one time or another written a program to "steal passwords" from their school? Now if this individual is changing things around, creating problems for teachers and students, then, yes, there's a problem, but a fine and the threat of jail time isn't the answer. Obviously security is lacking at the school and something needs to be done. In most cases where someone has written a program to look like a shell, something like a simple inactivity timer would solve the problem (log out sessions where the keyboard hasn't been touched in awhile).
