Of course it will work on a Mac! Apple has complete control over the hardware and software. They have their chosen soundcard that they know will work - with Linux, you need to do the system engineering on your own(pick a soundcard with Linux support). Apple's value add is that they do all the work for you to create an integrated system. You wouldn't just go add some random soundcard to a Mac and expect it to work either.
I'd say go with whoever has the best coverage even if the phones aren't all that cool. I stuck with AT&T for years because of the cool little gadget phones they kept giving me, but after having dropped calls in the middle of job interviews I decided it was time to switch to Verizon. They don't have the latest, smallest phones, but at least my calls get through most of the time(although the network is now a bit overloaded from all the former AT&T customers switching over - it's still better than what I had.)
As for the Cingular/AT&T merger - I'd wait to see how it all pans out before making a choice. They can promise you that things will get better, but if it doesn't then you're still stuck with crappy service and a 1-2 yr contract.
Lots of people here in the SF Bay Area got so fed up with AT&T that they all changed over to Verizon. Unfortunately now Verizon's network is overloaded with all the new customers and it's almost impossible to get a call through around 9pm when the switch to off-peak hours occurs. Of course I didn't find this out until I already told AT&T to get lost and changed to Verizon. However, I'm gonna stick with Verizon anyway - at least they seem to be a bit more competent than AT&T so they will get these problems fixed sometime soon.
The grass isn't quite as green as it looked from the other side.
I'd have to agree that it's probably the temps that are killing you. I've have the same board and it runs fine under Redhat 9 and Win2k. My temps were getting a bit high so I took the CPU heatsink off, re-applied the thermal paste more carefully and voila! it runs at 38C no load and 45C with full CPU usage. Plus its only a Athlon 2400, but I've got it clocked close to 2700 speeds with no problems. Who knows? Maybe I just got lucky, but temps over 50C definitely aren't helpful.
And I was wondering why it took everyone so long to find out about this - I ran into this problem about a year ago and just reverted to older drivers. Not sure how much my 3D performance is slowed by using the older drivers, though,
I'd have to agree. They're just making up excuses to keep everyone distracted while they outsource more jobs. I'm sure they'll think of another excuse when this one grows tired.
I wonder if this was why they sold the hard disk business off to Hitachi in the first place. Maybe they knew about the high failure rate and wanted to wash their hands of the whole mess before it got too bad?
Alias hasn't made much sense for SGI since PC's and Mac's became equal to or better than SGI graphics workstations. I'm willing to bet that over 80% of Alias sales are to customers using Mac's and PC's, not SGI systems.
I'm just happy this is making the stock go up. I've got a lot of shares left from when they layed me off a year ago that might actually be worth some money now!
I'd have to agree that this article doesn't cover much, but then again nor do most articles reviewing keyboards. They say the keyboards have all kinds of cool features, but they neglect to mentionthat the keys are complettely unresponsive. I just bought one ofthose Zippy EL keyboards after reading great reviews all over the net, onlyto find out that the keys are spaced all weird and you have to whack the spacebar really hard because it's sortof recessed. I'm sending it rightback as soon as i finish with this post, which looks like shit because i can't get half of these damnd keys to work. Anybody know of a decent FULL SIZE EL keyboard that actually works so i can program late at night without pissing off my girlfriend?
Yeah, I told myself I wouldn't be in line to see that crap again, but I guess I'm a glutton for punishment so I'm going again this year. And I'm sure Gandalf will be in line next to me with his broomstick, trying to score with the fat chicks from the rennaisance faire while playing dungeons and dragons with his other nerdy friends. Thankfully I can usually scare some of the super nerds away by chain smoking cigarettes all night.
Yeah, makes me wish I still lived in Montana sometimes. There are way too many full-grown adults here in California that think it's cool to dress up for fantasy type movie premieres.
I agree totally. The part where Gandalf proves to now be the stronger wizard is one of the best parts of the book, plus it sets up the whole palantir story where Pippin uses it and makes Sauron think that Saruman has the ringbearer. I'd rather that PJ find something else to cut out of the movie instead of this scene. Of course I'm sure the numbnuts at New Line won't let him add the footage back in now even if he wanted to.
I have the basic version of Ghost for home, but I'm wondering: What about using ghost to backup a dual boot setup - Linux and Win2k on one drive. Can I back up each partition separately so I don't re-image my Linux partition everytime Windows dies? I've backed it up that way for now, but I don't know if it will work properly when something really does go wrong. Just keeping my fingers crossed for now. . .
Yeah, I've always wondered why the AGP spec sticks with 32 bits and keeps upping the clock instead of just switching over to 64 bit. A 64 bit bus like PCI-X would work nicely in this situation - one GPU on the lower 32 bits and one on the upper 32 bits.
However, I think AGP will be around for awhile due to all the gfx specific features that PCI-X does not have.
I second that motion. I whole heartedly agree because I've dealt with too many of these egotistical smarty-pants from prestigious universities. They would rather sit in a meeting and argue about the proper definition of a simple word than to move on and actually get something done.
I know close to 20 people who have had Zone Alarm installed for awhile and I've yet to hear of any problems from any of them. Even my parents, who are more than a little confused with "all that new fangled computer gadgetry", haven't managed to mess it up yet. I usually install Zone Alarm on every computer I build for people.
I'm not saying that the problem you mention isn't real - I just haven't seen it in my experience.
Yep, I spent awhile trying to d/l it on theonering.net only to find out I could have got it through bittorrent a whole lot quicker. There are already 79 people seeding it over on suprnova.

Cool! I knew I stuck with my GF4 Ti-4200 for a reason. Well, that plus the fact that the 5xxx series cards require a huge noisy fan to keep them cool.
