  1. AIX and Files over 2 GBs on Ask Slashdot: How Reliable are Enormous Filesystems in Linux? · · Score: 1

A year ago when I was working on an AIX system and investigating their new support for file sizes over 2Gig (not 4Gig), I remember it was a bloody pain to switch over. Not only did you have to rebuild your file system and recompile ALL of your applications with the new libraries to get them to support the greater file sizes (I don't remember if you had to recompile apps that didn't care about large files), but once re-compiled, you couldn't use the same binaries with older file systems. On top of all that, there was a significant performance hit (10% to 20%) on file I/O.

Again, I don't remember all the details, but in the end, we decided it was far too painful to implement the changes in our application. YMMV.

  2. It's a shame... on Review:Stopping Spam · · Score: 2
It's a shame we have to get to the point of writing books about stopping Spam, but I guess it's one of those things we have to deal with. I had one work account where I was getting several dozen spams a week (I know other people who've had more). The only way I finally got rid of them was to go to work at another company, thus dropping that email address. ;-)

(I managed to really piss off a few sysadmins with my crontab mailbombers before I learned to chill out and focus my complaints more... ;-)

I don't know if I agree with the analysis (a number of people here have already pointed out serious flaws), but it was still a fun article, and I think should be taken in that light. There is no doubt Linux is growing, but there are still plenty of unknowns out there. I've a gut feeling that the Y2K problem is going to put more pressure on people to switch to open standards and software (easier to validate). NT is going to continue to slip. More people are going to just get so fed up with MS's inability to deliver that they will start to consider alternatives. Unix was never seen as an alternative OS for "the masses" like Linux (and even FreeBSD) is. It's time for a change.

Funny thing is, even if the DoJ suit fails, I think it's provided a "window" of opportunity, getting people to think if they really want to sell their soul (and their data center) to a company like that.

These next few years are going to be interesting... ;-)

People tend to spend a lot of time bashing Big Corporations when, in fact, a LOT of our salaries are paid by those same corporations. Less $$$ spent on buggy proprietary software means more $$$ to push my way to work on other interesting things.
