  1. Liability Issues? on AT&T, 2Wire Ignoring Active Security Exploit [Updated] · · Score: 1

I'm not a legal eagle by any means but if someone out there has the knowledge or connections, can you shed some light on liability?
I mean, if it is that AT&T has deployed customer equipment with known exploits, I would think the user would be limited in their liability - or so it seems to a rational mind. Not only is this bad news for consumers as a whole but it is just as bad - if not worse - for businesses such as the small businesses that use these modems/routers.

  2. Am I biased or just plain mistaken? on FCC To investigate Comcast Bittorrent Meddling · · Score: 1

I'm not sure why the posts in here complaining about the FCC and Comcast are receiving such low ratings from the moderator. I know some of them contain sarcasm but that's been a hallmark of Slashdot since the 1940's!

As for the FCC fining Comcast anything significant, I don't see that happening. The recent ruling to allow multiple media channel ownership in major cities and preventing states from mandating 'naked DSL' service show a government body much more concerned with corporate objectives rather than citizen interests in my perspective.

  3. Re:good idea on UK Propose Registering Screen Names with Police · · Score: 1

Ah but you see, that really should be the crux of this argument, shouldn't it? After a law such as this is passed, how then do we 'protect the children' except to monitor all Internet activity. Perhaps not in a 24/7 capacity but if we can stipulate that due to this law we might need to monitor some subnet for a little while just to make sure that certain offenders were not using unknown names, well, it's all in the name of protecting society.

I don't think any of us have much sympathy for sex offenders but surely something like this can be put aside for more effective techniques that are less prone to abuse.

  4. Even with your new gov't? on Canada's CD Tax Out of Hand? · · Score: 1

Didn't Canada elect a new party to power? Why isn't this matter brought up with local student groups to write their MPs? I'm wondering if this makes any sense since I don't understand how blank CDs automatically qualify for something going to the recording industry. After all, with the amount of people burning home movies and photos as well as documents, this doesn't seem to be fair at all. Just my two cents.

  5. Make a difference on New Bill Would Ban Public NOAA Weather Data · · Score: 1

While our letter writing to editors and to the esteemed Sen. Santorum will have some effect, a real difference could probably be made by donating even say $10 to his opponent, Bob Casey. I'm not affiliated with that campaign's staff or the candidate but I do know that if Santorum is defeated and if this bill is a lightning rod, it will serve notice on other members of our Congress. It's time that we put our money where our interests are, same as all the other special interests. In case you do want to visit his site (poor guy is gonna get /.'ed!LOL!) then head to http://www.bobcaseyforpa.com/ (not sure if it's his "official" site but do some checking.)

  6. We need accountability before taxation on Pay To Have Your Phone Tapped · · Score: 1

As a US & Canadian citizen, I am tired of hearing government asking for more tax revenue due to things such as "increased security costs". What we need is a transparent process that details the costs of the government doing business and then we will know whether or not we should be giving up our hard-earned dollars. For example, in this case of money for wiretaps, the government and Bell Canada need to reveal why this is such a costly endeavour. If regular citizens are expected to bear increased responsibility due to new "security issues", then someone please tell me why Bell Canada and other corporations should not also do their part?

  7. The alternative is just more open on What Keeps You Off of Windows? · · Score: 1

While I've programmed for and used Windows for quite some time, I recently switched to both Apple's MacOSX and Linux. Although I have myself experienced DLL hell, et. al. with Windows from both an end-user and developer perspective, I don't think there was just one thing that sent me to Mac OSX/Linux. One major determining factor that wasn't technical was Microsoft's business practices which stifle creativity not only in the software market at large but also in their own organization.
