Actually, better technology that accomplishes the same purpose has been around for a long time. Biometal. Shape memory alloys? remember those? much better for the application. And for that matter, pure quartz has piezoelectric properties. Coincidendally, you can make a hell of a fine lens out of quartz. Why not simply engineer a solid state, self focusing lens?
