This is more reason to cheat! I only ever cheated on ungraded work because it didnt count for anything. If the work was graded i would nevre trust the quality of friends work!
As a former student, I would have to say that the actual punishment is of little conserquence, the real question is how easy is it to get away with.
The best techniques for stopping cheating were: a) A confirmation test, that may not actually be graded, but the test result were required to corralate with the assignment mark. b) Where computer based submission was required, been told that the computer automaitically compared all submissions for signs of cheating (weather this was true or not, didnt really matter) c) Stories of what happened to the person who cheated last year.
What always amazed me was the lengths people would go to to cheat, often takaing far more effort than actually passing. Attempting to adjust someones elses code, so it looks different, then spending hours trying to solve the nwe bugs in the altered code. Or spending hours to break through security or whatever to gain a copy of someone elses work.
I think this had little to do with viruses. We did not suffer any in our company. The firewall was set correctly, MS patches were up to date and the virus scanner was up to date. No brainer, for someone who knows what they are doing.
Besides in linux really that virus proof? Have you seen non-techno users using linux. For example, on their home systems, i have seen a couple of people who always login in as root, and will open any email attachment. Imagine, linux would still suffer a number of virus problems if a large number of non-technos were using the OS in such a way.
I seems that alot of people would love to understand why people arnt moving in the linux direction. While I personally think linux is great and all i just cant switch over the company i work for to linux at the moment. It has NOTHING to do with ease of use. I could easily configure linux to be easy to use. I do all the installs and config not the actual user.
The reason is that i just cant get the commercial software i need for Linux. For example AutoCad, our accounts system.
It would be nice to be running on linux, for stability etc. However the continuing problem is that our company is developing custom software for use only in house, on windows platforms. We cant afford to have users running two platforms. This will of course increase our reliance on MS.
I think the linux community needs to focus on making applications easy to port. And perhaps encourage 3rd party commercial software. I think the recources of open source programmers would be better used creating NEW and inivative products rather than making copies of existing software.
It is possible that there will be less reason to switch to linux in the future as MS is definatly getting their act together with stability etc. For example time spent doing general maintenance etc, would now be about one quater since moving from a win98 to XP enviroment. (our company did not suffer from any of the recent virus issues either). Moving to win2003 is a very real prospect for us in the coming months, perhaps even dumping our linux mail/file servers.
Well thats just our real reason for sticking with MS at this stage. I hope that in the future our company will be operating exclusivly on linux. But this really seems to depends on weather the community embraces 3rd party developers or scares them away because they, heaven forbid, are trying to make money.
"ozone layer is much healthier than in previous years"
In fact the WMO has realeased findings that say the ozone layer hole above the antartic has this year already reached the record size of 2000.
"The 2003 ozone hole remains similar to that observed in 2000, although more circular and apparently more stable. The size of the ozone hole has increased from the 25 M km2 reported two weeks ago to 28 M km2, matching the record size observed during mid-September 2000. This is larger than the combined areas of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, and contrasts the exceptionally small ozone hole last year that split in two during late September. In recent years, the ozone hole has usually attained its maximum size during mid-September. However, it is too early to predict with certainty whether the area has peaked this year." - From WMO report 18 Sep 2003.
For example, making the L2 cache be the size of main memory.
I was of the understanding that to double the size of a cache would effectivly half its speed. Mainly due to the way caches are designed. By removing the addressing overhead. Hence the reason we dont have whopping great level 2 caches, and only a very small level 1 cache. So a L2 cache the size of main memory could actually cause performance loss.
Yes, this is true. I think if you already have windows on the machine then there shoudl be no real problem booting it to play a game.
I agree however that it would be nice if developers did support linux users, especially if they are running their server.
However perhaps some developers, like me, are still little reluctant to release commercial applictions on linux. (However i am happy to help contribute to open source in my spare time). The reason for example is peopel like the free software foundation. What if i should accidently compile a library realased under GPL into my programme. Then legally they have breached the GPL by not relaeasing the full source code. Now i know that most of the libraries are realeased under the Lesser GPL, but considering the FSF demands that they hold the copyright to this software they are entitiled to change this at any moment, for future releases. While perhaps this may not be a real problem, it is the towards commercial software of people like this that piss me off.
I think the real point here is if you dont like the products dont use them. None of these companies are offering a free service. The idea is you put up with a few ads and they let you use their bandwith/servers/etc. So to be honest i dont blame for attempting to block these other clients out, open source or not. If open source users wish to use these networks, their programms should also accept any advertising.
Why bother, google is far more advanced than this. When it can acuratly calculate "the answer to life the universe and everything" why would you bother which such trivial conversions.

Ok the reason that the word billion is not used is becuase the word is incorrectly used in america to represent 1000 million. A billion is actually 1,000,000 million. And is used as such in many countries. On an internationally read website it makes sence not to use this term.
A "billion" is a relatively new word. It comes from the Italian and is first found as bimillion, bilioni, and byllion. It originally meant a million million, and in England and Germany it still does. That is the meaning of the prefix bi: two "million" written side by side and meaning a million million.
