  1. Re:Turn Them Off on Ask Slashdot: How Do You Organize Your Virtual Desktops? · · Score: 1

Virtual desktops were one of the major advantages over Windows, until Microsoft finally caught up. One for the browser, one for email, one for my wife's email, one for VirtualBox, and the other 8 for whatever else I am doing. Couldn't do without them.

There will be no need for them to slow down either. To streams of traffic can just spread out a little and interlace as they go through an intersection, once most cars are autonomous. Passengers will get used to it after the first few times.

I am amazed they have the gall to suggest it might be illegal to specify a format they don't choose to support. It is as if they were a manufacturer of nuts and bolts, that only made non-standard sizes. Then along comes a buyer who specifies that all future nuts and bolts must conform to the published standards - and they think they are being discriminated against. As soon as the standard formats are more widely used, many new and original applications will appear, both proprietary and open-source.

Hans Moravec's book "Robot" suggests that 100 teraflops is about the level required for human intelligence. So we are up to 10% of his target. But human intelligence still seems very far away, so either he has badly underestimated, or our collective programming skills need significant improvement.
