  1. Considering Napster's setup... on Universities Begin to Ban Napster · · Score: 2

...It was only a matter of time before this started happening.

Back when I was in college at NCSU, they shutoff access to all the nettrek and federation servers because because they were taking 40% bandwidth.

Someone is paying for this bandwidth (the colleges) and I don't think they're paying all that money so that people can collect MP3s.

  2. Those who do not learn from their history... on Self-Destructing DVDs: Son of DIVX · · Score: 2

    ...are doomed to repeat it.

People want to collect movies. They don't want disposable disks that self destruct. They don't want to have to keep paying for movies after they've paid for them once. This is why so many people have large collections of VHS tapes.

This might have worked a year ago, /before/ DIVX.

In the end, I have just one question: Why go through all of this for something so thoroughly trivial? Video stores work. Blockbuster is a perfectly valid rental revenue channel for DVDs. Even if you add the convenience of throwaway DVDs, its just not worth the added costs.

  3. Re:GCHQ is not for spy's on The GCHQ Challenge · · Score: 1

GCHQ built Collossus at Bletchley Park during World War II. Collossus was the first programable computer, and indeed was destroyed at the end of WWII along with the plans. Since all of the activities at Bletchley were classified, no one could talk about their triumph, and thus an American project got the honors for years.

As to why Collossus was destroyed? Simply because the Brits didn't want anyone else using it to do ENCRYPTION. Bad job to create the machine that lets your enemies perform better encryption than you can break.
