    there are 4 options that escalate nicely for the first 3 steps, CD, DVD, BDR, Tape

    tape is horribly expensive for the drives and so unfortunately it is not a realistic option for home users. but blu ray holds 50 gigs (100 if you want to mess around with very expensive and semi-compatible XL discs)

    that's pure unadulterated bullshit.

    i like linux and use it on several of my machines, but windows has much more robust and mature sudden failure disk recovery and consistency (it has to with all the BSODs over the years)

    you don't need long filenames when all you need to do is run autorun.exe to get the management software running or install extfs for windows.

    fat32 is not patented, it's the enhanced exfat that is patented, you can also present as a USB CDROM if you want to, that is how my blackberry loads management software onto the PC if you hook it up to a PC without management software (no internet required)

    you can also use wifi to present a network drive or a web service drive.
