As the article points out...spam is here to stay and the only way it'll die is if people stop responding to those damn viagra emails. Why does it always have to be the case of one guy ruins it for everyone?
Anyway the best spam deterrent that I've discovered so far is this service called shadango.com that I started using about two months ago. It's frickin' solid. It enables me to check both my hotmail and students address from the same interface and my inbox has been virtually junk-free. Check it out....Jeff Lindl recommends it highly!
Yes part of the solution is Bayesian filters...but Bayesian filters will not stop people from forging domains.
Until people starting checking for reverse MX records...incidents like this will continue. Once everyone starts doing reverse lookups you'll see a noticable decline in spam.
On a side note I've started using this service called shadango.com which allows me to check both my students address and hotmail address from the same interface. It uses Spamassassin for filtering, and thus far has kept my inbox spamm-free! It's frickin' solid! Now I'm not saying services like this are the answer to the spam problem, but I've found it definitely worth the time to check out.

Another RBL list that went down recently was at osirusoft.com. About two/three weeks ago they had a DOS attack. This makes me worry that the spammers are winning.
On a side note, I've been using this service called shadango.com for the last month and it's filtering has been pretty solid. Also it allows me to check my hotmail, yahoo, and students address all from one interface. It's frickin' solid! I don't know if services like shadango.com are the answer to spam, but i'd say it's worth a try.

I do agree that a couple of courtroom decisions will scare people, but that will only be short term and eventually the confidence in file sharing will return. At first when i heard about the RIAA suing end users i got a little paranoid and stopped. But after reading articles like this one my confidence is restored because there are still millions of people doing it. So it's basically strength in numbers. What are the chances that they'll choose to file a lawsuit against me amongst the millions of others who do it?
I agree, but i think that spam will never be completely stopped...it will just be a never ending battle between the spammers and anti-spammers. One persons junk mail is anothers desired viagra email. Just recently I found this site(shadango.com) which allows me to check both my hotmail and yahoo address at the same spot and it uses Spamassassin to filter. So far I've been pretty impressed at it's ability to keep my inbox clean. I don't know if systems like this are the answer but I think it's definitely worth checking out.
I've heard really good things about SpamBayes but have yet to check that out. Although I recently stumbled across a service that uses SpamAssassin, and so far it has kept my inbox junk free with no false positives. Besides the filtering service (shadango.com) works well because it enables me to check both my students and hotmail at the same place. All I have to say is it's worth looking at.

That's my two cents,
