  1. Re:Earbuds + a hands-free mic on Apple to Become Wireless Provider? · · Score: 1

I've thought this myself. The real killer feature would be integration between an iPod and a cellphone- I don't necessarily agree that they should be one and the same though, having owned a Treo 200 that, while cool while it lasted, when dead left me without a phone or a pda...

But, an iPod with bluetooth, that would automatically pause and indicate that the cell in other pocket has an incoming call, possibly announcing the caller from the Contacts on the iPod? Now that makes a whole lot of sense to me.

And I have no doubt that Apple really doesn't have a problem with you stripping the DRM. As you say, you are now partaking of the crack that is the iTMS, you are happy, Apple is happy.

But *legally* Apple cannot condone any DRM strip scheme. The problem here is not with Apple.

All things considered, Fairplay is a pretty amazing concession from the RIAA in the first place.

I like both Plastic and /. but actually prefer the "freewheeling" nature of Slashdot more. Yeah, there are a lot more misspellings and trolls here, but Plastic seems to be a consistent, yet erudite, echo chamber. Maybe just because I'm more of a tech geek than an English major.

Either way, it's good to have both around, and I spend far too much time of the day on one or the other..

  7. Re: Apple Different than other large companies on Apple Hunts Playfair in India · · Score: 2, Interesting

Well, Apple is different in that they were able to establish a relationship with the RIAA that was more benevolent towards DRM than the RIAA wanted with regards to consumer rights in the first place. Yes, Apple sells more music/iPods because of this, but I doubt MS/Real would do anything other than kowtow to the RIAA's demands.

I believe that is the fundamental difference..

Beyond that, of course Apple is a large multinational corporation that looks out for its' and APPL shareholder's interests. No point in pretending otherwise. Still, Thinking Different beats being told Where To Go Today :)

  9. Neuberg on AppleScript - the Definitive Guide · · Score: 3, Interesting

Not to be a complete fanboy, but Matt Neuberg is a truly amazing tech writer. I've pursued AS syntax for years now, and as soon as I heard he was doing a Definitive Guide, was really thrilled (Best book prior to this on AS was Danny Goodman's book from what, 1991?). Have not been disappointed- Like his other works, you've gotta read each chapter about 12 times, but when it finally sinks in, it is worth it..

  10. Re:Tools on Literacy: Natural Language vs. Code · · Score: 1

As Aeiri notes, a computer is designed to compute. We assign the abstractions on what it computes, but as a tool, it processes 1 and 0. Understanding a bit about how a computer works is fundamentally the same with knowing the basic processes, whether a 60's mainframe or the G5 I'd like to have. But how I (choose to) interact with a modern computer is substantially different than how I would have had to interact with the 60's mainframe. And I have no doubt that with another 50 years of language/interface design that you speak of, that that future secretary will be able to do far more technologically and still not have to know a goddam thing about Assembly/Java/OOP or whatever the preferred programming language of the time is//
