The license in France is actually considered more like a Bachelor's degree... A master's degree in France is called "DESS" or "DEA" if you consider futher studies.
Here is a little breakdown (number of years after high school) DEUG: 2 years License: 3 years DESS/DEA: 5 years Doctorat: phD
Programs are much different in France. I studied in both countries (I am French) and I hold a degree in each.
