Uhm, they are playing Calvin Ball in court, actually, I would say that is news...

So anytime now we might read that the Prosecutor "lept suddenly onto a table, donned a mask, and screamed something about a 'bonus wicket' before proceding to race around the courtroom"?

I wonder what would happen if an impromptu game of Calvinball broke out here on /. ?

Someone HAS started a (mostly) global beer database. RateBeer.com They claim to have over 16,000 beers currently listed...

Just be happy your school has any kind of internet access. I can remeber long afternoons with a few buddies, waiting for pamela to appear via the 14.4 courier we had on our *screaming* 486DX!

Sure, but in my case I'm still a full-time student, and in my area of the country there just aren't any part-time *tech* jobs that will work around my schedule. I've got student loans to fall back on if I really get fired, so I'm mostly just their for the experience.

Besides, its entertaining to tell people I got fired twice by the same company and still work there. But come graduation, screw them!

  5. I got fired on Purpose, Twice! on She Was Fired, But Never Told · · Score: 1

Once upon a time (2 years ago) I was hired as the first intern for a small networking startup. (actually, at that point I was the second overall employee, but whatever). After nearly two years of huge growth the company nearly went bankrupt and laid off nearly 2/3 of its 700+ employees, including me. At that point my internship was done and I was only a part-time employee, so I wasn't too bummed since my class work is a bitch.

Well, they decided after a few days that I was cheap and usefull enough to hire back, so I went. About 8 weeks later, same thing. More layoffs, then after a nice week of unpaid vacation I was asked back. Sure, why not, its christmas...

Now, other than silently musing if I'll be fired each pay period, things seem to be settled. I figure at this rate I'm likely to own the company in 10 to 12 months!!!

  6. My Cake and High Speed Too on Internet-Ready Houses For Sale · · Score: 1

I currently work for a company whose working along these same lines. Its only been in the last year and a half that living communities have started thinking along lines of high speed internet for their residents. But it has quickly gone from the "why should we?" to the "why haven't we already". The larger management groups have finally learned that this is important if not crucial to the future of the resident communities.

The thing that has made the biggest difference for us as of late is the increase in quality and decrease in price of the different wireless solutions that are out there. Now we can go to almost "any" living community and offer access, even those without any type of centralized infrastructure.

To me, a fully connected (wired or wireless) is a given to happen. Its' just up to all you hardware guys to give us something we can put in our grandmother's "internet thingy" so that she can get access from everywhere (not just anywhere).

  7. Its About Time! on Dialectizer Shut Down · · Score: 1
I for one am glad to this site shut down. "Humorous" sites like this cost corporations valuable time and money when their employees waste Company time doing mindless browsing of the web. Now, instead of reading all those import Microsoft Security Bulletins in the horribly inefficient "Swedish Chef" dialect, you will be back to reading them in their standard, more efficient "Bulls**t" dialect.

Now, if only we could get them to go after "The Onion". That site is making a mockery of the more respectable media like Fox or Weekly World News!

  8. My experience with the Lego Test. on Replacing SAT with LEGOs · · Score: 1
I actually took this "Lego Test" myself. It was part of the interview process to get a Resident Assistant job at my university. They way they handled it, they took five of us into a room with a box of Lego's and each of us was observed by a "judge" (a current member of the staff). We were told to "build something and be prepared to explain how it reflected a quality of a good leader". Afterwards, we were each individually interviewed by our "judge" and then they met to decide who would get the job.

It was an interesting experience because it definitely did separate the leaders from the followers. (a leader being the type of person they were looking for). More importantly, it separated the bullies from the good leaders. In other words, the guy who was so convinced we should build a gun and ignored everyone else's opinions looked pretty foolish, even though he was being authoritative.

While I'm not sure this is the best way to pick college students, it does seem to be a logical way to pick people who would be in a position of authority. I don't necessarily agree that a good student is the one who organizes the study group, but they would likely make a good drill sergeant!

  9. Re:A measure of success on The Simpsons Turn 10 · · Score: 1

If the number of catch phrases is the mark by which we measure a show's success, then the Simpsons definitely do take the title (although Southpark is giving them a run for their money). But I think the real key to the Simpsons success has been the turn of focus away from Bart and more to Homer. Sure, Bart has his moments, but the rebellious youth is a well known, well worn character. It is Homer, in all his glorious laziness and ignorance that makes the show as entertaining as it is.

  10. Access for All on High Speed Net Access Defining College Life · · Score: 1

I too enjoyed the high speed connection while living on campus. Now that I'm off campus (and waiting on my DSL) I've realized how much I've grown to rely on it. Now instead of just hitting my favorite weather page, I have to sit through 20 minutes of local news, or worse, 20 attempts to dial my ISP. Checking email takes what now seems forever and, once again, I spend more time playing with my Slinky than actually reading the page I tried to load.

Now that students and business professionals are getting a taste of a "real" internet connection at school or work, why shouldn't we expect the same at home or on the road? I work for a company that provides DSL/Wireless service in apartment complexes and hotels. In the past year I've been amazed at how quickly the demand for high speed connections from these type places has increased. People want there access and they want it to be fast. I think this is a great thing, the dream of a wired world is starting to look like a realistic goal.

Now if only my local Bell would hurry up and get me connected!
