I personally don't think MS should be split, for the practical reason that I don't expect it to actually increase competition. However, I do support some corrective action.

Debian and RedHat have not engaged in such practices; there is no evidence of them ever harming the consumer in order to harm their competitors, and furthermore they are not monopolies so even if they had it would not be illegal. If Debian engaged in the same practices as MS, of course people would want action against it.

Why do I care? How about because I cannot watch DVD's without breaking the law or buying another OS? You agree that MS has violated standards; well the entire point of standards is to allow communication with other OSes, applications, etc. If I'm using a non-MS OS and MS doesn't obey standards, that means I cannot communicate with MS -- i.e. 80% of the machines in the world. Obviously that affects me; as you can see, I am online. So are you. Obviously the ability to communicate is important to both of us.
I highly doubt that MS own's the rights to DVD... I'm sure if Creative would/could make a DVD player for linux it would. But they haven't how is that Microsoft's fault? You have a TV card for Linux right? It has a video/audio in jack right? Buy a normal DVD player and plug the jacks in.. Easy DVD for linux.. That what I do when I want DVD on Linux..

Splitting up Mickeysoft is a bad idea... I can guarantee that most of the slashdot users are for the split just because it is Microsoft. If it were RedHat or Debian, those same people would be up in arms saying that they shouldn't be split or whatever. If Microsoft hadn't become a company, honestly, how many of you people would be using a computer?
How many of you had for first computer experience to a non MS OS? Mine was an Apple IIe.. then Window 3.1. Microsoft made the computer more usable for the "average" computer user, much like what AOL has done for the internet. If the average computer user were stuck using linux, there would be a LOT let people using computers. Period.
There are plenty of other companies hacking out programs for use with Windows, Symantec, Adobe, AOL, Qualcomm that are making money from Windows. Its not like the API's are totally closed and just about impossible to hack a program for the OS, if that was the case, then hell yes, torch the place. But its not.

Yes, some of Microsoft's past actions are questionable, but the majority of them have been resolved. Microsoft Internet Explorer is installed on the machine by default, so what? You can go download Netscape and Uninstall IE. How would the average user go about downloading Netscape if IE wasn't installed? (yea there's ftp.exe, but the average user doesn't know that it exists...) Yea, MSN is installed on a typical install.. so are Prodigy, AT&T WorldNet, AOL + others) which can also be uninstalled. Face it, Microsoft has brought the computer industry to where it is today.
Linux brought the internet where it is today.. of course Microsoft had to adapt to the internet standards and create it's own internet programs. It had to keep up with linux in that aspect. Now that it has caught up (and modified standards, which *I* do believe is unacceptable) slashdotters are angry.. 'They have a monopoly! It's bad!' Do you use windows? No. Why do you care?

I've been programming in VB for over 3 years now.. and it is a very good language if you want to create an application with a good gui fast. I know most of the MS bashers on here will never like it.. will never use it.. I don't care. Just don't force your opinions on me.
perl has it's faults too.. Can you create a GUI with perl and ONLY perl? non one this Tk/Perl stuff.. you can't. Don't get me wrong... Perl is all I use when I'm programming on a linux machine (when I'm at home), at work I use VB. They are have their string points and weak points.

All eToys's web site says about the toy is that it is a "German Soldier by Dragon". There are NO NAZI emblems on the figure/doll. So by RTMark's representation of the doll, all Germans are Nazi's. And some of the Slashdot readers are on their side, not with this issue, but it just seems so childish on RTMarks part.. And the part where "Many investors responded by dumping their eToys stock." Maybe the investors where out of lockout and were finally able to sell the stock that they had in the company to make a nice profit. OH no.. I used to LOVE slashdot, but seeing the mentality of the readers AND artical posters, I'm sickened. News travels faster than light here. Its eassy not to read the whole story.
Lets just say for a moment that they DVD Audio encryption is encrypted with military strength code. And the players/decoders have the decryption keys. SO WHAT! If there is an audio out, the neet little red and white jacks on the back, I'll be able to record the DVDAudio disc to the computer anyways. The encryption is pointless.
I'll never understand why they need the encryption. Its just a waste of time.
PalmOS definately wins the battery war, I will give you that, but that's the only thing i will give you. Both the CE and PalmOS, to me are equal. I can get to the memo/notepad just as fast on both palms. I can get to anything that both handhelds have equally as fast (BTW the CE that I and using is not a handheld PC its the palmPC, yes the Hand Held PC is more like a desktop) And for the record, I'm using the Palm IIIe and the Uniden UniPro PC100.
so for me the only difference is the amount of software, which the PalmOS wins hands down, for now, and the look and feel.
In both cases, WinX, and WinCE let you hide the Start bar. I also have both a CE and PalmOS PDA's and the CE machines have more screen size, the input area on the CE is hideable, where on the Palm it isn't (at least to my knowledge). I don't mean this to be an embedded OS war, just stating that on the CE and WinX you can hide the start bar, so that point of your argument is invalid.
Quite proposterous... why not run it with *nix, or at least something vaguely y2k compliant.. also, does running win98 slow down your brain processes as much as it does with a normal PC?
Come on, that's a little harsh, yes Win* may not be the most beloved OS out there, but its probably the most used and people know how to use it. It makes a logical choise to use the OS. Yes they could write their own OS for it, spend the time to develop the OS, debug, test, (and so on) or use a version of Win98 that's has already had a few years of testing.
Or Olympus and IBM Japan could just buy out a company that already has a premade OS they could use.
It makes more sense to use Win98. Hell, WindowsCE might have also been a good choice. 9 times out of 10 people will go for what the know.. I'm not at all surprised that Olympus and IBM Japan went with Win98.
