  1. A simple solution on Pop-up Ads Coming to A TV Near You · · Score: 1
For the last couple of years, I just haven't watched TV at all. The only time the tellie goes on is to watch DVDs or when the kids play with the Nintendo.

All the news I want to see I get online or on JJJ (Australia's national alternative radio station - ad-free).

I actively filter ads with my squid proxy so I don't get them online either.

    Life is good, ad-free.

  2. Reinventing the Wing? on Boeing Blended Wing Body Aircraft · · Score: 1

Flying Wing type aircraft have been around since WWII. Gotha, a German aitcraft manufacturer had built working prototypes of it's Ho-229 flying wing bomber by 1944 (the allied forces recovered some in various stages of construction).

The only thing *new* here seems to be the fact that they're applying this design philosophy to passenger aircraft (and somehow I think that's probably been tried before too).

  3. Apple iBook 500Mhz on Which Laptop To Buy? · · Score: 1

We recently bought a new iBook and have been pretty pleased with it. Currently only running MacOS 9.1, but I plan to put OS X and maybe SUSE PPC edition on it too.
Admittedly, we've mainly been using it as a portable DVD player, but the plan is that the little woman will use it for her Web Design business too.
From purchase to delivery, I've been pretty happy with Apple Australia. Better than a lot of the PC companies I've dealt with, that's for sure...

  4. BeOS 5 drivers for my ET6000 on What Isn't on the Internet? · · Score: 1

    Looked everywhere...
    But to no avail.

  5. Appropriate Materials on Rosetta Disk For 10K-Year History · · Score: 1

Well, as far as I can see it, from the point of view of someone who does at least, some historical research. The most useful things to put on such a medium would be descriptions of daily life in various cultures, recipes for food eaten during this period, typical fashions, dance steps, all the kinds of things that usually aren't put in "high literature". From this sort of record, archeologists might actually be able to get a better understanding of life at this point in time.
Also important would be social attitudes, reasonings behind special events and the like.

  6. GSM Mobiles around the world on Net Access On The International Trip? · · Score: 1

Just in case nobody has mentioned it: the USA and Japan use different GSM networks to most of the world. That is to say, your US GSM mobile (unless it's a triple band mobile) will not work in Australia or Europe.

  7. Pirating is Good for the RIAA on Pirates Steal Negative $1,400,000,000 from Music Industry · · Score: 1

It's plainly obvious that pirating is a healthy earner for record companies. They don't like to admit it, but without pirates, sales would drop. Now, I can hear you all saying, "What is this fool on about?" but just stop to think for a second.

You pirate a few tracks and play them for a friend. That friend may not for various reasons have use for mp3's but decides that (s)he likes the music, so (s)he goes out and buys it.

Alternatively, you could download a track of the net by an unknown artist and decide you like it enough to buy the whole album.

These are but two of the many scenerios where pirating helps the industry through exposure.

Of course, the RIAA and similar organisations will fight this because a) they are clueless and b) by fighting it, they give more focus to the act of pirating, making it more attractive to the "pirates" and thus perpetuating the piracy ;)

Well, that's my little say on the matter...

  8. Argh!!! We're filtered! on "I Would Strongly Advocate Full Disclosure" · · Score: 1

It seems our Firewall's are using one of those nasty filter programs at work. Peacefire comes up with the standard "Inappropriate Material" warning message! Grrrr....

  9. Dumbfounded! on Australian Censorship-client side filters · · Score: 1

I can't for the life of me believe someone would seriously consider this. I was dumbstruck when the original proposal was made, but to force people to run "approved" software on thier PC's? This takes the cake!
I run a firewall on my link as it is, and sure I *could* install filtering, but why would I?
I'm an adult and as such quite capable of deciding what I should and shouldn't see.
Sure, if you have children, do something if you're worried, but to force such a solution on the whole population, is lunacy!

I'm almost disgusted to be called Australian!

  10. Net Addiction on Are You Online More than 4 Hours a Day? · · Score: 2

Hmmm, yep I guess I must be addicted then. I dial up first thing in the morning before I do anything else, then on and off at work, then back on when I get home... And yes, after a day or two without access i get withdrawal symptoms..but they go away if I can find something better to do...

Well that's my 2 cents worth...

  11. Telstra - Competition at last! on Telstra Opening Network · · Score: 1

Well in Brisbane at least, C & W Optus are starting to offer local calls.
The big news I'm waiting for though, is affordable high bandwidth internet access. However, I feel this may be some time coming...
