The Enemy isn't MS, it's unfree software.

Kinda like "Who's not with us, is against us!" ?
Why are there people so narrow-minded to think open and closed software can't play along?

All these companies work pretty (*very*) hard (yeah, yeah... even MS, else they wouldn't be where they are today) at making software in a market where there's so much competition. God forbid they get paid for their time efforts, right?
And even if you've ment "open" with "unfree": not giving away your source seems like a pretty good way of not having your competition having the same edge you have.

Don't get me wrong: I really like the Open Source model because it gives software the chance to grow beyond the limits of propietary software, but it doesn't make 'em enemies.

I kinda finished most of 'em (+ a bunchload of Win-only games) :o (didn't want to step on your point m8 ;) )

    I was actually wondering:
Games are a tad slower on lin than their win-variant. Is that because of drivers, lack of focus for Linux-Desktop in the past or the whole kernel - xfree - desktop - layering thingie?

  7. Re:Under Windows... on Performance Benchmarks of Nine Languages · · Score: 1

"g++ -O3 -march=athlon-xp -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" ran 13 seconds (34 vs 47) faster under lin than under win with same parameters (gcc 3.3.2 vs mingw 3.2.3).
I also didn't have that performance gap between csharp and gcc 3.2.3, only with running g++ without optimizations gave a comparable gap. CSharp with optimizations from the article was 1 second faster than gcc with optimizations. Csharp without optimizations was 1 sec faster than gcc with optimizations, both lagging ~ 10 secs behind their optimized brothers.
I couldn't run the VS c++ benchmark ("/clr /GL" parameters incompatible... didn't find the fix), but I'll suppose the results are accurate.

But why compiling under cygwin? I don't use the platform, but using mingw would've given the article a lot more credibility.

Hopefully some nice, strong leader will just "take over" our country and tell us how things are going to be rather than let us have any input into our own futures.

So now you have chosen your own nice, strong leader, who represents 100% of your population.
Always nice to read "Liberalism.. GOOOOD, socialism... BAAAAD". Shows great insight.

In my country (Belgium... yes, that little speck on the world-map that looks like something a fly left behind) the 2 greatest parties are the Liberals and the Socialists, so they are forced to work together.
True, every decision takes ages and at the end of the day no-one gets his way, but imo that's just a little bit better than 1 guy -and may I say such smart and charismatic one at that- calling all the shots.

  10. I just don't trust that 1 year warranty on Maxtor's 300 GB Monster Reviewed · · Score: 1
Currently I'm on my 2nd maxtor 30 GB/7200 rpm drive. The first one broke down 10 months after purchase (but I lost the receipt, so bugger...).
The one I now have is about 2 years old, but 1 year ago it started having trouble booting (I think the read arm wouldn't unlock, because the drive did spin), this was the same problem that caused the first one to go down.
A good friend currently has exactly the same problem (same drive), and I heard 2 guys in my class discussing the same problem.... thats 4 people in the same classroom with the same problem: those clickety-clackety noises at bootup about 1 year after purchase
Oh yeah: my samsung 8 gig drive I bought 4-5 years ago is still spinning smoothly

This has got me thinking about warranty manufacturers give their products:
I used to look at it and say "oh, it has warranty, good enough".
But now I look at it as how long the manufacturer trusts the product will work. And if maxtor only trusts its product to work for 1 year may indicate that the expected average lifespan is what... 2 years? Still a bit low for 300 GB IMO.
