For ecologee.net means that H.R.5646 will push the awareness towards a "greener" Internet. No more, nevertheless we are happy about this move!
ecologee.net want's to create an Internet enteriley relying on renewables. The more power can be saved the soon this will be likely.
One vision is, that clients, data centers, backbones, phone calls will be routed exclusively over a literally "green" grid, not a VPN. The Energy Efficient Internet Project --> http://www.csee.usf.edu/~christen/energy/main.html or http://www.ecologee.net/ itself aim for an intelligent use of micro processors, networks and usage of alternative energies.
I am an partner of an ISP in Germany and I am about toconvince them to switch their power consume to one of our ecologic energy providers. Now, we work on an internal initiative to convince other ISP's beeing hosts in a data center in Berlin to move the whole data center to new contracts regarding energy.
If you were a very small center, you could consider switching versa photovoltaic, loads of contries in Europe will even share the cost of private investment in renewables too. You gain a lot.
We run http://www.ecologee.net/ which is an ongoing project about the power consumption in the Internet. People making use of distributed computing have to justify why the use electricity and bandwidth of others.
I don't see it as a bagatelle to pretend to use spare cycles of someones pc, that's robbery!
This goes totally against a "greener" Internet and is just not fair if the project owners make not clear, that they build a gigantic power destruction machine.
Thank you very much. Your information is very useful for us. It shows that a range of new considerations will arise when we would model a scheme for it.
I am not an expert in the technology you mentioned, though we have to interest somebody for doing a research and engineering project on it. Please get in touch with us, if you have more advises for this, or write it down here. We are reachable over the address info@ of the ecologee.net domain.
Every card should be monitorable (electricity, heat flow) by the cpu to write an ecobilance of each component of the system. This result would be monitored by its superior organization. So you can label it down to the last fractal.
Indeed, I would go for more efficient sub-networks. The point was labelling. You or me have to find a way how to give a reliable sign that network x has consumed that spectrum of power under this and that condition. Someone, some institutions have to agree on a standard, how it can be achieved.
I would not start next year, I would start to find researchers who are close to this topic. My guess it could be solved in the header to get a "real" eco bilance stroke me, but I would be happy if there are alternative solutions too.
You take the term "localy" as geographically locally, do you? If you have an organizantions virtual network you could determine even worldwide a dedicated structure of a particular grid with its power consumers.
I started with this example of the internet, because many years ago I worked on a homebased powerline network, which transmitted digital data, to control home appliancies - to control their power consumption. But if you work with my example in sub-networks and ipv6 is more practical to aplly there, I am happy someone takes this ball and passes it futher.
Labelling. I receive my bills, which exactly tells me, how much power, of which quality I did consume. Labelling is that what I want to do with the internet.
Recently I started an initiative for the sustaineable, ecofriendly internet. The idea is to write a power-code into the header of each packet. Every router, every ip-able device should label the packet and should do the maths between each route.
In the end I receive the amount, what kind of sources supplied the technology to forward my traffic.
In practice this means, every consumer, every isp can take part in this network.
A real green grid.
Unfortunatly our website http://www.ecologee.net/ runs not in English so far, but this might change.
In my opinion the whole discussion as we know it since decades heads into the wrong direction. Of course it is neccessary to research on new energies and obviously we can see, that after a long passionate input of brain solar cells, windpower an any other becomes ubiquitous.
I came to the conclusion, that it is typical for our psyche to "generate" energy if we become aware of the lack of her. The whole discussion shows me, that it is more sexy to talk about New" energies and "new" ressources.
It is difficult to tackle those problems, they are even challenging, but unfortunately they appear to be less effective to come to a solution.
It is in fact more easier to think about a single, isolated system which is able to produce some energy than to analyse in a holistic way even a small consumer (in a technical sense).
I give you an example. It is possible to plan a fridge without, electricity, even without gas. The whole world do not think about systems in use, they come not up with a new solution!
Saving energy is somewhat unsexy, I cannot explain why, but it appears to be the looser if it comes to efforts to talk about savings, which could lead to a total similar energy bilnce to solve the problem.
This has to turn. Energy saving in processes is much more challenging, from the engineering view, than "generating new" power. Thats dull.
We her started a small website, so far in German, to give ideas for a "green internet". Some ideas are about "green power" www.ecologee.net, but the biggest ressource lies in savings.
I wish you a happy + green year.
Britain is used to cattle grids in the road which are in the countryside, far away from cables. There the acceptance might be higher for such a device.
My provider of power is aware of this, "Greenpeace Energy" in Germany delivers during flaws energy mainly by gasturbines. At least this company does not buy electricity from a coal or nuclear driven power plant during this times. Now it is up to build a huge virtual power plant, existing from many small plants which deliver together a constant stream, which is calculatable.
And btw my website is run by an internet-provider, which is backed up by Greenpeace-Energy. Nice green-run website!
Gosh, don't be so european. Listen, - recently I attended a conference from http://www.greenpeace-energy.de/ and of course they made the assertion that there is no time anymore for jokes like this, which appears to be inherently installed especially in the north-american culture. Its the same as the French do light the Eiffel-tower.
I know that its a way of decorating, part of this culture and folk-art but the way of expression can change over years.
I doubt, that the Munich October-fest was that big 100 years ago! It grew, but it will decline certainly one day. Nothing can stay for ever, cultures not and energy...., - ahh you know it.
Things and phenomena of culture can oscillate in their pheanotype. They can disapear or having rennaissances, but they are certainly not cemented to last for ever!
Thats exactly what I do. I buy electricity from a company called "Greenpeace-Energy" http://www.greenpeace-energy.de . They asure me that every new consumer will get in 3 years time power from a brandnew plant which uses sustainable energy.
In that time they have not enough power, they will run their gas-powerd station faster to avoid buying in "dirty" energy.
Now I am on the move to an ISP who pays extra money to use "green-energy" servers only and I am about to convince other ISP's.
The idea to live entirely on and with clients using sustainable energy-resources thrills me.
So this is not right that understanding of the article of power-deviation, but I would support the idea.

These data centers already use renewables and if you know one more, feel free to add it, as it's a wiki. --> http://www.ecologee.net/pmwiki.php/Endanwender/%D
