If you had each traffic light detect how many people each direction were using those things, and let it take a poll, then it could change according to how many people were waiting at the light. Then you would get smart intersections that favor the side with the most cars. Of course, that would require installing some sort of software in the lights....
But hey, eventually you could just build them into cars and then the city could network where all the traffic is and truely coordinate the lights. That would be sweet...
