  1. Laptops on airplanes on Computer Chips Exploding for Science · · Score: 1

So much for laptops and electrical devices on airplanes.

  2. PGP doesn't kill people... on Philip Zimmermann and 'Guilt' Over PGP · · Score: 1

Isn't this the same type of worry that people have with guns ( as well as plenty of other things ); "guns don't kill people, people kill people". should the people who make box cutters feel bad because their product was used in a terrorist attack? The focus needs to be kept on the Terrorists and their motives and not what tools they used to carry out their plans.

  3. A unified desktop? on Ask Robert Young · · Score: 3

In the recent interview with Doug Miller, he spoke of, or implied, that the lack of a standardized desktop could be keeping commercial developers from creating Linux applications. Do you think it's possible, or desirable, to come up with an 'official' desktop for Linux? If so, what do you feel is the best way to go about it?

For another interesting read about Feynman and the Challenger investigation check Feynman's book "what do you care what other people think". It's a very entertaining book about his adventures and life, with a bunch of chapters on the challenger investigation.

  5. A console first! on Microsoft Unveils Gaming Console · · Score: 1

In the press release Microsoft states that the x-box will use the DirectX API. This is very interesting. It appears to mean that it will be the first game console to release it's SDK to the general public! Anyone with a modem can download the DirectX SDK from Microsoft's site and program games for this console! The specs say the x-box comes with an 8 Gigabyte Hard Drive. Does this mean we will be able to yank it out and toss in a 40 gig 7200 RPM drive? I know it won't support ultra 66 or anything but just the rpm increase is a 30% performance boost. What about the RAM? Unless it's soldered onto the motherboard it will most likely be in a Dimm slot. Another possibly easy upgrade? What do you guys think? I'm also assuming it will be able to play almost all of the current PC computer game titles right out of the box. Does anyone know this for sure? If so this system can't lose. The release of the x-box marks a milestone for the console gaming industry, possibly marking a couple headstones along the way.
