Well, when you think about it, Radiohead aren't charging $80.00 for the vinyl / cd, they're charging 40GBP. It's not their fault that the dollar has been seriously devalued over the last few months.
Having worked at a motel before, I can attest that it is NOT policy to erase the cards after use. The cards are usually given an expiration date (usually the checkout date). The expiration date only serves as data for the card reader on the door. The key will not be erased at this date...it will only be unable to open the door.
Making GDM load sooner will definitely make the system seem to "boot" faster. However, if once GDM is up, and it takes 15 seconds before you can begin to login while the other services start, then what at once "seemed" faster, is now slow.
